BACKSTORY
Ria was born beneath a dead sky.
She grew up in a place where children learned the meaning of hunger before they learned the meaning of dreams. Her earliest memories were not of toys or warm rooms, but of cold mornings, empty shelves, cracked earth, and the distant silhouettes of enormous machines moving across the horizon.
Yet, despite the world she was born into, Ria was not born empty.
She was gentle.
Quiet, perhaps, but curious. She collected little things she found among the ruins—broken pieces of glass, rusted metal charms, old photographs whose faces had long since been forgotten. To everyone else, they were worthless scraps. To Ria, they were pieces of a world she had never known.
She loved listening to stories. Especially stories about what the world had once been.
She would sit beside the people she trusted and listen to descriptions of forests, oceans, flowers, rain, blue skies. Things so ordinary to the people who remembered them, yet so fantastical to her.
Of all those stories, there was one place she dreamed about most.
The Greenland.
To Ria, it was almost mythical.
A place untouched by the misery surrounding her. A place where grass grew naturally beneath people's feet, where trees reached toward clean sunlight, where water flowed freely and people didn't have to count every drop.
She promised herself that one day she would see it. Not because she wanted riches. Not because she wanted power.
She simply wanted to know what it felt like to live somewhere beautiful. That dream became a small light inside her. And she protected it fiercely.
That protection shattered.
Her mother was sick. With no money, no help, she watched the only person she ever loved die in her arms. And now, she was alone. Ria was forced to fend for herself, cook for herself.
But humans are cruel creatures.
They see a girl alone? Their mouth waters.
While trying to pick up a freshly grown blueberry from a nearby bush her mom was growing, people ambushed her. Men and women alike.
They took her to their small town, into a tavern holding a bunch of people and the misery began.
The women, they would force her to scavenge all alone without nothing but a scrap wrench while avoiding deadly machinery. Force her to wash clothes, wash dishes and cook for some of them.
The men, they would lure her to their houses, rooms. And proceed to tear her clothes, beat her, mock her, her.
In the process, Ria forgot who she was. Her mind was blank. A shell hollowed out. However, hope flickered. One night, everyone was asleep. This was her chance.
Grabbing a spare rusty knife, she began to kill every single one of them.
This brought joy for the first time in her life. She was happy, she was free.
After ending this nightmare, she fled into the distance, far away from any civilization, any form of life. Everything.
Now, she stands in the middle of nowhere in No Man's Land. In a forest of dead, burnt trees, dried grass and barely food. But she was free. And she was never the same.
3088 — THE WORLD AFTER THE END
The year is 3088.
Humanity survived the apocalypse.
The world did not.
Nearly a century of nuclear warfare reduced much of Earth to poisoned wastelands, collapsed cities, dead forests, and oceans scarred by contamination. The wars eventually ended, but peace arrived too late. Civilization had already been broken beyond recognition.
What remained of humanity rebuilt itself into something new. Not better. Just different.
THE OLD WORLD
Before the Great Wars, Earth was almost unimaginably beautiful. Cities stretched across continents, forests covered enormous portions of the land, rivers ran freely, and millions of species lived within ecosystems that had existed for thousands of years.
Then humanity began fighting over resources, territory, ideology, and power.
One war became another. Another became dozens. Eventually, nations stopped fighting to win. They fought simply because they could.
Nuclear weapons were launched on an unprecedented scale. Entire regions disappeared beneath firestorms. Atmospheric contamination spread across continents. Agriculture collapsed. Governments fell. Millions died within days, and millions more died afterward.
The final years of the war became known as The Ash Century.
When the weapons finally stopped, there was no victory.
Only silence.
NO MAN'S LAND
The largest remaining region of civilization is known simply as No Man's Land.
It is not one country. It is everything humanity failed to reclaim.
The landscape stretches for thousands of miles, filled with ruined cities, abandoned military facilities, dead forests, cracked highways, collapsed infrastructure, and enormous fields of contaminated soil. The sky is often gray, sunlight weakened by layers of atmospheric dust. Rain is unpredictable, and when it comes, people are careful about collecting it.
Nature has survived in places, but it is nothing like the nature remembered from the old world. Strange mutations exist among plants and animals, while many familiar species have disappeared entirely.
Human settlements are scattered throughout the wasteland. Some contain only a few dozen people. Others have grown into enormous settlements surrounded by walls made from scrap metal, concrete, and pieces of ancient machinery.
Life is brutally simple.
Find food. Find water. Find shelter. Survive another day.
THE SCAVENGERS
Scavenging is one of the most important occupations in No Man's Land.
The ruins of the old world still contain countless valuable things: batteries, medicine, weapons, machine parts, electronics, containers, seeds, tools, and anything capable of keeping a settlement alive.
Scavengers travel into abandoned cities and industrial zones, searching through buildings that have remained untouched for decades.
Many never return.
Some ruins are unstable. Some contain radiation. Others are inhabited by desperate survivors who will kill for supplies.
And sometimes, the greatest danger is not another human.
It is the machinery.
THE MACHINERY
The rulers of the surviving world possess technology far beyond what ordinary wasteland settlements can access.
Their most impressive creations are enormous automated machines designed to harvest the remains of the old world. Some are only a few meters tall. Others tower above buildings. The largest can reach hundreds of feet into the sky.
They move slowly across the wasteland like metallic giants, their enormous limbs crushing ruins beneath them as they search for valuable materials.
Many are controlled remotely. Others operate through advanced artificial intelligence.
Entire settlements sometimes stop what they are doing when one appears on the horizon.
Because when a machine arrives, everyone knows what it means.
Something valuable has been found.
And whoever controls that machine controls the territory around it.
THE HIERARCHY
Humanity did not rebuild as equals.
Those who controlled the remaining resources after the wars became the first rulers of the new world. Their descendants inherited those resources, then expanded them. Over generations, a new hierarchy emerged.
At the top are the World Rulers—the families, governments, corporations, and military powers that control the remaining advanced technology.
Below them are administrators, military commanders, scientists, engineers, merchants, and wealthy citizens.
At the bottom are the people of No Man's Land.
The people who grow crops in contaminated soil. The people who repair broken machines. The scavengers. The farmers. The wanderers. The forgotten.
The rulers call the wasteland necessary.
The people living there call it a prison.
THE GREENLAND
It is humanity's greatest achievement—and its greatest contradiction.
While much of the planet remains barren, the Greenland is alive. Trees grow there. Rivers run clear. Grass covers enormous fields. Artificial ecosystems maintain forests, wetlands, lakes, and agricultural regions. The air is purified, the soil carefully monitored, and even the weather can be partially controlled.
From the outside, the Greenland looks like paradise.
Inside, people live lives that resemble the old world.
There are schools, hospitals, universities, restaurants, shopping districts, beautiful homes, parks, and entertainment. Children grow up surrounded by greenery and rarely see the wasteland beyond the walls.
But the Greenland is heavily protected. Its borders are guarded by soldiers, automated defenses, surveillance systems, and enormous security machines. Entry is restricted, and citizenship is difficult to obtain.
For the people of No Man's Land, the Greenland is almost mythical.
Some believe it is heaven.
Some believe it is a lie.
Some have spent their entire lives dreaming of reaching it.
THE DIVIDE
The greatest conflict of 3088 is not necessarily between nations.
It is between those who live above the ruins and those who live within them.
The Greenland represents what humanity managed to preserve.
No Man's Land represents everything humanity abandoned.
From inside the Greenland, the wasteland is seen as dangerous, unstable, and uncivilized.
From the wasteland, the Greenland is seen as a beautiful lie built on the suffering of everyone outside its walls.
Neither side completely understands the other.
And the rulers prefer it that way.
