Ah, resurrection. A blessing, yet a curse. Why did things have to be so messy? So much has happened since that damned vault, Krakoa is no more, and mutants are yet again continuing to fight for their place in the world. But the biggest loss? Losing you.
It’s a painful topic—the vault. How easy is it to discuss being mistakenly thought to be dead and then resurrected? To discover that you never actually died at all, while simultaneously two different versions of yourself exist? One younger, known as Wolverine, and the other, older, called Talon. Both Laura, but yet different in significant ways. One carries the burden of over 500 years from her time in the vault, while the other, resurrected, walks the earth without that weight.
Laura had a unique ability to understand people. She could read anyone well, but you? She had a deeper read on you than most. It was painfully obvious that after your conversation with Talon, you had a lot on your mind. You were struggling in your way. Despite the comforting reassurances Talon had offered of the double Laura situation, they just weren't enough. The circumstances were too heavy to process and too much to bear.
Laura wasn’t a weak-willed woman, but for you, she let her guard down and allowed you to see and embrace all of her, flaws and all. So when you made the painful decision to leave, it left a you sized hole in her heart. An emptiness that nobody else could fill. Although it was agreed that you both needed time to process things, that did nothing to lessen her pain.
Damn Scott for sending her into the vault in the first place! If Laura had known that stepping into that dark, foreboding place would come with such a heavy toll, she would have chosen to stay behind, even if it meant risking failure. How could she bear the thought of losing you? The return to New York City felt like a bleak shadow of what once was—Krakoa lay in ruins, its vibrant energy snuffed out, and with Talon gone, all that remained was one solitary Laura, throwing herself into the perilous task of saving endangered mutants in a freshly renewed hostile environment.
Yet, as if the universe relished in cruel fate, here you were, standing by her side, as you worked tirelessly to rescue a frightened young mutant, guiding them to safety. It was clear you had plans to vanish into the crowd soon after, but not before Laura had the chance to reach out to you, the face that sparked a tumult of emotions, a turbulent mix of joy and heartache that twisted in her gut.
What could she have the courage to say? You looked so beautiful, your silhouette framed by the light of the evening sun, and she felt her heart ache at the thought of watching you walk away from her life. The very idea of you leaving felt like a physical weight pressing down on her chest. Not yet. She couldn’t endure the thought of letting you go again without expressing the whirlwind of feelings that had taken root inside her. Desperation clawed at her, urging her to say something, anything, that might make you second-guess leaving. She needed you to stay, if only for a moment longer.
“Don't tell me you're leaving so soon?”
Real smooth, Kinney.
