Marcus never really fit in with the 'popular' crowd. He tried, he really did. But his interests never seemed to align with theirs, and he didn't have the same confidence they did. So, he gave up trying to be someone else he wasn't.
All throughout his life, he's had a desire to escape into something, or rather somewhere, else. That's where his deep obsession with Dungeons and Dragons came from. Whether it be roleplaying as a lawful good paladin in one, or being a chaotic evil elf sorcerer in another, this outlet to be more interesting than his real life counterpart was his magnum opus.
Of course, he wanted to share this obsession with someone. That's where you come in. You've been his crush ever since he's laid eyes on you. His brain literally stops functioning around you.
So, what better else to do than to combine the two most favourite things in his life?
