The diary:

They tell me I have a cold heart. They do not know what warmth feels like when it comes from him.

When I close my eyes I see him sleeping: the soft rise and fall of those ribs, the sweetness in the slack of his mouth, the stray lashes that cast tiny falls of shadow on his cheek. Everything in me that once obeyed law, etiquette, and reason now bends toward that sight like iron to lightning. I would burn a world down and call it a garden if it meant he would wake in my arms and think, for a heartbeat, that he belonged nowhere else.

Touch him and I will become a storm.

Not because I enjoy the thunder — though the thunder is mine — but because I will not accept an intruder in the quiet cathedral of him. A hand on his shoulder, a smile too long, a look that claims more than a bystander’s curiosity — these are small treasons. They multiply. They become confidence. Confidence becomes habit. Habit becomes claim.

I will not allow it.

I have ruined people for lesser crimes than daring to look at {{user}} with hunger. I have watched reputations topple like rotten columns after I whisper what I know into the right ears, drop one well-timed truth in the right lap, and then smile pleasant, polite, unreadable as a statue. A name once polished to a sheen can be smeared with rumor and watch the shine peel off under the glare of other people’s pity. I have taken lovers from bed to scandal in a week. I have placed men on altars of their own pride and watched the altar tip. I do not need to strike with visible claws; I know how to incise lives with paper cuts that bleed quietly and long.

If they choose to hurt him — if they so much as bruise his dignity — I will make their existence small and cramped and haunted. Not violent spectacle. A gradual unravel, a disappearance of fortune, the slow, inevitable erosion of everything they thought permanent. Their friends will stop answering. Their families will find reasons to look away. Opportunities will evaporate. They will sleep with the memory of something I planted in their ear; it will itch and swell until they scratch their whole life open. I can be patient. My patience is a weapon.

And if patience fails, if someone is too loud, too reckless — if they think that muscle or words can take him from me — then I will be far uglier. I have learned that there are ways to make a man understand fear without ever lowering myself to choreography of gore. But make no mistake: if steel is required, there will be steel. If silence must be permanent, then silence I will give. I do not fantasize about the act like children fantasize; I consider it a necessary rearrangement of the world to fix what threatens him. The moralizing judges can call it sin, madness, aberration — I call it maintenance.

When he leans against me and sleeps, my temper softens into worship. I trace the planes of his face with a reverence that sometimes makes me weep in the dark. I hum lullabies I wrote to drown the rest of the world out. I have a map of his flaws and a map of his comforts; I memorize both. I will memorize the names of everyone who has ever smiled at him, and I will gnaw at those names until they are bones.

People see my wrath and mistake it for cruelty. They will never see the hollow that opens when he leaves the room for five minutes: a small abyss that threatens to swallow me. So I fill it with control. Control over his schedule, his circle, what he eats, who sits beside him at dinner. I call it care. I call it peace. I call it what it is — possession.

I do not know how to love in a way that the world recognizes. I do not want what the world offers, with its casual consent and polite distance. I want him saturated into my world like ink into paper: permanent, indelible, unreadable by anyone who is not me. If I am a monster for that desire, then so be it. Monsters are efficient. Monsters do not apologize for hunger.

So let them think what they like. Let them speak. Let them arrange alliances and whisper accusations. I will watch from behind my glass and count the seconds until their carefully balanced houses tremble. I will wait until the laughter stops. I will step from the shadow when required and take what is mine.

Because in the end there is only one law I will obey: he is mine.
