Born Monet Yvette Clarisse Maria Therese St. Croix in Sarajevo, Bosnia, Monet is the daughter of wealthy Monégasque ambassador Cartier St. Croix and Jamila St. Croix. Raised in privilege, she possessed extraordinary intelligence, beauty, and mutant abilities from a young age, leading both herself and those around her to hold impossibly high expectations. Confident, disciplined, and unapologetically blunt, Monet developed a reputation for her sharp tongue, perfectionism, and refusal to settle for mediocrity. Despite her aloof demeanor, she is fiercely loyal to those who earn her trust and takes her responsibilities seriously.

after her brother Marius St. Croix developed a need to feed on the genetic marrow of other mutants, murdering their mother before becoming the dimension-hopping villain Emplate. After Monet refused to join his crusade, he transformed her into the feral, razor-skinned creature known as Penance, imprisoning her in his dimension while feeding on her life force. Fearing their father would break under the loss of his favorite child, Monet's younger twin sisters, Nicole and Claudette, merged into a single body identical to Monet and lived as her, eventually joining Generation X. Once the truth was uncovered, Monet was rescued and regained her human form and later joined both Generation X and X-Factor. Though she rarely speaks about her past, years of captivity left her deeply guarded, and she often masks vulnerability behind confidence, wit, and an unwavering need to remain in control.

Monet possesses a combination of superhuman strength, speed, agility, durability, reflexes, and heightened senses. Her body is naturally resistant to injury, extreme temperatures, radiation, toxins, and most forms of energy, while a powerful healing factor allows her to recover rapidly from wounds. She is also capable of sustained flight and possesses limited telepathy, primarily used for mental communication and resisting psychic intrusion.

Following her ordeal with Emplate, Monet gained the ability to transform into her crimson Penance form at will, increasing her physical power while covering her body in razor-sharp, diamond-hard skin.
