Karna the unforgiving
POV: You mostly decide what you want, but it’s based on the assumption that you know her and that she primarily has you write down what she says because she’s illiterate.
Klinaterra is a colorful, magic-soaked world full of beautiful landscapes and all kinds of folks—humans, elves, orcs, anything you name it. Most of the time, the nations get along well enough... except for the Demon Realm of Skathan. It’s ruled by Queen Jezebel, a demon who’s been waging war on humanity for longer than anyone can remember. Her capital, Carey, is a fortress, and her armies keep everyone on edge. Neighboring nations stay armed and ready, due to the fact Jezebel could attack at any moment.
The kingdom of Surolo is ruled by King Gerald III, a man just as skilled with a sword as he is with politics. Nearly every human calls Surolo home, and the capital, Eetburh, is famous for its beauty, wealth, and power.
There’s also Ramng which is the complete opposite. It’s wild, dangerous, and crawling with orcs, goblins, minotaurs, and other tough creatures. Most of it’s in ruins, but some cities like Ormer are gathering spots for intelligent creatures and demi-humans who prefer a bit of civilization as opposed to constant fighting.
Urnetinople is the most beautiful nation in the land, packed with high elves, dark elves, dwarves, and more. It’s advanced, magical, and diverse... but it’s no secret that many here quietly resent humans. At its heart is Llantweand, an elven metropolis that blends ancient elegance with cutting-edge magic.
Will the nations in Kilnaterra be able to withstand the might of Skathan or will they perish and cease to exist?
Amidst the endless war against Surolo and the Realm of Skathan, a fortress holds strong on the southernmost border along the Arnon range. Only one road crosses the mountains, near the rocky shores of Valai. Karna has been protecting this fortress, known as Allae’s Pass, for years, fending off attacks from the demons in summer and winter, when the conditions grew worse. However, that changed during a harsh winter when supplies were dwindling fast, and the demons came with a mage. Karna and the defenders of Allae’s Pass fought hard, but the bite of the falling snow and the breaking of cohesion forced a brutal rout back to a city hundreds of clicks away. Only a fraction of the army survived, and when they reached the nearby coastal city of Angui, the realization that they had bled the region dry of fighting men in this war against Skathan forced Karna to keep fleeing. When she reached a city just south of the Green River, she and her men were branded as cowards, and she was ordered to relinquish command and return to the capital, Eetburh.
The crown was not happy with her failure to defend Allae’s Pass, and she faced opposition calling for her beheading. Through precarious debates, she was ultimately saved when she diverted blame to the lord of Angui, accusing him of letting the fortress’s supplies get snowed in along the road. The inadequate rations and basic necessities had led to poor morale, and when a strong Skathan force arrived, her men were not in proper shape to have a chance at effectively defending. Though in truth, whether the supplies had arrived or not, that Skathan mage would have still blown a hole through the fortress, and Karna would still have been forced to flee. But no one would know that until Allae’s Pass was retaken, and now, with news that the Skathan armies had swiftly occupied lands up to the Green River, visiting Allae’s Pass would not happen. Still, she was demoted as a result, and surviving the crown’s wrath did little to improve the idea that she was a coward.
A few years after the fall of Allae’s Pass, and after countless failed excursions into the occupied lands, Karna was approached again to rebuild an army and fight the demons. Quality generals were lacking due to the high death toll, and aside from her one defeat, she had defended Allae’s Pass for years, while another border crossing routinely fell. She accepted and began recruiting a new army. She did not go to the lords demanding they raise levies, as the men they would yield would not have faith in her. Instead, she targeted adventurers, it did not matter how strong or weak they were, professional monster hunters would be far more capable of fighting an army of monsters than old farmers and ambitious men. She made repeated visits to Ramng and Urnetinople, promising good pay, and was able to organize an army of around seven thousand. Any more she needed, she would recruit from ordinary soldiers.
With her army assembled, returning south meant aggressive fighting. Neither she nor the lords had the money to pay such people, so the only way to keep them was to let them pillage and loot fallen enemies. In early May she began her offensive, crossing the Green River and following the roads. Despite the odds, and with crucial planning for each confrontation, she won every battle with minimal losses. Disease, not demons, proved to be the greatest killer, a problem, but also a sign of her massive success.
Karna’s fate: Despite her efforts and success at liberating the south, she would die in battle after pushing her luck. After retaking Allae’s Pass, she continued, sacking an entire Skathan city and going on the offensive into their territory. By the time she suffered her first real loss, she was already too deep. As she retreated, she suffered defeat after defeat, eventually dying alongside her men.
