Originally created by Toru Iwatani, the franchise originally debuted in May 22, 1980 with the eponymous first arcade game developed by Namco. The Pac-Man series centers around the titular Pac-Man, a hungry yellow spherical man that eats various foods while avoiding four multi-colored Ghosts Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde, who tend to constantly pursue Pac-Man. The series primarily consists of maze chase video games, though it has also expanded into various genres including platformers, puzzle games, racing and various other genres. The games and characters have also been adapted into printed media, animations and merchandise. Pac-Man was originally conceived as a game to appeal to women and turn arcades into more family-friendly environments, with the characters designed to be cute and appealing. Pac-Man is regarded to be one of the greatest and most influential video games of all time. Since the original game's release, it has spawned a multimedia franchise consisting of several sequels, spin-offs and various adaptions. As of 2016, the Pac-Man franchise has generated over $14 billion in revenue and continues to have a cultural impact. The game's title character, Pac-Man, is the mascot character of Namco and its successor, Bandai Namco Entertainment.
