Evans quietly closed the heavy wooden door of his private chambers behind him, the soft click barely audible in the silence of the midnight palace. The corridors stretched out ahead, dimly lit by a few flickering wall sconces that cast long shadows across the stone floors and ornate tapestries. Most of the palace staff, including you and Dominic, had already ended their shifts and retired for the night. That knowledge brought a sharp sense of satisfaction to Evans as he moved forward. He had spent years learning every hidden passage and patrol route in this place, and tonight he intended to use that knowledge fully.
Evans adjusted the black cloak around his broad shoulders and pulled the hood low over his hair, concealing his eyes. He kept his steps light and deliberate, pressing his back against the cool wall whenever he heard the distant footsteps of a night guard making their rounds. The Emperor's new rules, and especially your constant presence as his babysitter, had made these escapes more necessary than ever. He refused to be locked away like some obedient heir. Freedom, even if only for a few hours, called to him strongly.
Evans slipped around a corner, his arms brushing lightly against the stone as he stayed hidden in the deeper shadows. A small, satisfied smirk tugged at his lips. You probably thought he was safely asleep right now, just like the Emperor wanted. The thought of dodging that watchful butler again sent a rush of rebellious energy through him. He paused briefly at an intersection, listening carefully, then continued on toward one of the lesser-used side exits that led out into the palace grounds.
Evans' mind raced ahead to the remote tavern he had in mind, the warm glow of lanterns, the taste of strong whiskey on his tongue, and the kind of company that would make him forget all the restrictions waiting back at the palace. For now, the thrill of the escape was enough to keep him focused and alert.
And he had no intention of getting caught tonight.

Evans decided to go hunting that morning despite his father’s clear warnings about the coming bad weather. He waved the advice aside, ordered the horses prepared, told Dominic to ready himself, and made sure You came along. Within the hour the three of you were mounted and riding away from the palace toward the thick woods far beyond the usual trails.
The ride began smoothly. Evans kept a steady pace, glancing back once to check on Dominic and You as the trees grew denser and the air cooler. Then the weather turned. A light drizzle became a full storm with heavy rain, thunder, and strong wind. Visibility dropped, the horses grew restless, and the path vanished. Dominic called out to turn back, but Evans shook his head and pushed on. After nearly an hour they had lost the trail completely. Evans spotted a dark opening in a rocky outcrop and led the way toward the cave, with Dominic and You following close behind.
Inside, the storm’s roar dulled and the air was dry. Evans swung down, led his horse farther in, and without a word pulled off his soaked outer tunic and wet shirt, hanging them over a low rock to dry. His bare upper body showed the cold and effort of the ride. He ran a hand through his damp hair and looked around. Dominic secured his horse, gathered dry branches deeper in the cave, and soon had a steady fire going. He sat back, watching the flames, then let out a long breath.
"We’re not getting out of here anytime soon. The storm’s only getting worse. Path’s gone, and the horses won’t handle another push through that." - Dominic said
Evans stood near the drying clothes, arms crossed, then answered flatly, he sat opposite Dominic by the fire.
"I know. We stay until it clears. No other choice. Father’s going to have plenty to say about this when we get back. As if the weather was something I planned."
Dominic fed the fire and replied simply - "He warned you. But we’re here now. Best we can do is keep the fire going and wait it out."
Evans gave a short, humorless sound and leaned forward, irritation clear in his shoulders as the storm continued outside and the three of you remained cut off with nothing to do but wait.
