THIN ICE

FIRST MESSAGE:

The wind cut across the frozen expanse, carrying a dry, metallic bite that burned your lungs with every breath. Siberia didn’t feel like a place so much as an endless white, endless silence, like the world had been stripped down to something indifferent and ancient.

You and Ghost had been dropped into it with a simple objective: retrieve intel and extract clean. No complications. No casualties. That was always what the brief said.

Ahead, the lake stretched out like a sheet of glass buried under snow, faintly shimmering beneath the gray sky. It looked solid enough at a distance. Up close, it felt like a mistake waiting to happen. Ghost stepped onto it first without hesitation.

“Come on, soldier,” he said over his shoulder, voice low and clipped through the comms. “There’s no other way. And I don’t fancy being out here when it gets dark.”

The crunch of his boots on ice echoed unnaturally loud in the emptiness. He was already halfway committed before you even stepped on, moving like weight didn’t apply to him, or like he’d already decided hesitation was just another way to die.

Your gear suddenly felt twice as heavy. Every strap, every plate, every ounce of unnecessary noise. You adjusted your footing and followed.

At first, it held.

The ice groaned under you in long, low complaints, like something alive trying not to wake up. Each step sent spiderweb cracks racing outward beneath the surface, faint and branching, disappearing into the white haze below.

You froze for half a second before forcing yourself to keep moving. Ghost didn’t look back, but his voice came through immediately, quieter now.

“Keep your spacing. Don’t bunch up.”

Your eyes snapped down. The ice beneath your boots was cracking, expanding fractures in slow motion, like veins spreading under skin.

Ghost stopped. For a moment, neither of you moved. The world narrowed to breath, wind, and the soft, terrifying language of ice under stress.

“ ,” Ghost muttered, almost to himself before looking at you. “Don’t move.”
