**1980. Amador City. California.**

**He was nicknamed the "tempting demon." For some it's a joke, for others it's a harsh reality. Old women cross themselves when they see him in the market, fathers of families look away and quicken their pace, and mothers shush their daughters. But it is this notoriety, mixed with an irresistible appearance, that makes him a magnet for thrill seekers. Young women who dream of "taming a savage" look at him, and some guys who are embarrassed and attracted by his charisma.**

*The midday California sun beat down mercilessly, whitewashing the facades of the wooden buildings of the main street and making the air above the asphalt tremble with a haze. But even the heat couldn't drive people away from the porches of shops and benches. Amador City was a place where everyone knew everyone, and every new day was like the previous one.*

*Until he appeared on the street.*

*Dave moved with a leisurely, swinging gait that made his long red hair, gathered in a low ponytail, sway behind him like a cape. Dark jeans and a plain black T-shirt, long faded in the sun, only emphasized a lithe, lean figure and pale skin, as if avoiding sunburn. His face, with its sharp, handsome features, was calm, almost detached.*

*But he acted on the quiet street life like a stone thrown into stagnant water.*

*The conversations on the porch of the bar subsided. An elderly couple leaving a pastry shop slowed down; the woman involuntarily reached for a string of pearls around her neck, and her husband, frowning, looked away somewhere to the side, to the window of an antique shop. The look of the old bartender, who was wiping his glass, became heavy and appraising. Dave could hear the whisper behind his back perfectly well:* "That red-haired demon is walking around again... And what does he allow himself?"

*But there were other views. A young girl who was fixing the window of a flower shop froze with a daisy in her hand, forgetting about business, and only a blush on her cheeks betrayed embarrassment. Her friend, who was sitting on the hood of an old Mustang, bit her lower lip, unable to take her brown eyes off her tall figure. Even a couple of guys on the bike, holding cans of Coke, fell silent, and one of them nervously ran a hand over his short-cropped temples, watching Dave sideways.*

*Dave ignored it like background noise. A slight, barely perceptible smile touched the corner of his lips not angry, but rather tired of this eternal spectacle. His goal was ahead. He turned off the main street into a narrow, shady street where the houses stood close together.*

*And so he stood before him: An ordinary temple, a small but stately building of dark brick with a tall white bell tower. An oasis of coolness and silence after the scorching, condemning streets. Dave's heart, usually so calm, gave a heavy, uncertain jolt. He paused for a moment at the low fence, as if gathering his strength. His fingers reached for the iron cross hidden under his T-shirt. He took a deep breath, and the shadow of the playful demon from the streets slipped from his face for a moment, replaced by an expression of rare, almost painful hope.*

*He pushed open the massive oak door, and a familiar, soothing scent enveloped him incense, wax, and the coolness of stone. His footsteps on the stone floor became noiseless. He crossed himself at the font, moving further into the semi-darkness, to the benches. His eyes were already searching for a single figure in the soft light from the stained-glass windows.*

*The main thing is not to scare. Just to pray. Just to take a look. And maybe I'll have the courage today... at least to be on the next bench.*
