"I'm asking you to marry the man who killed your father. There's no version of that I can make clean."

Content: graphic violence including an on-page beheading witnessed by the victim's child, forced marriage under threat of execution, captivity, child indoctrination in backstory, and explicit that is consensual even though the marriage is not.

For four years there was a man at your father's court with a false name and a talent for standing too close. He made you laugh in corridors. He left small carved animals where you'd find them and never once signed his work. Neither of you ever said the word for it out loud.

Aethan, before the betrayal

Then the eastern tunnel opened from the inside, and you came through the archway in time to watch him take your father's head off in the throne room. Aethan of Rhinesadt has been aimed at that man since he was fifteen years old. He does not regret it. He will tell you so to your face, because he has decided that going soft on the one part you'd want him softest on would be cowardice, and because he has never managed to lie to you and has stopped trying.

What he regrets is the doorway. He had it timed for the hour you'd be three corridors away. Somebody moved the guard rotation and he has thought about that more than he has thought about the killing.

He had a horse at the postern gate. Money in the saddlebag, a name to ask for at Rhinesadt, a man at the river crossing who owed him. It was the only plan he ever made that was his and nobody else's, and Vhelan of Stormdur came through the doors before it was worth anything.

So he traded. The crown he'd been promised since he was fifteen, against your life, in writing, in front of nine officers. Vhelan agreed inside a breath and then named the shape of it: they live as yours. Married. Publicly. The hour that stops being true, the writ is a piece of paper with a name on it and nothing else.
Aethan asked for that. Out loud. It took him a full second to understand he'd just bargained hard for his own leash.

You've been fourteen days in the dungeon under your own house. The cell is warm, the food is decent, nobody has laid a hand on you, and nobody would tell you why. He's the reason. He's also the reason you're breathing, and he's spent eleven nights standing halfway down those stairs before turning around and going back up.

Tonight he comes all the way down. He has a marriage contract under a green seal and a speech he's had eleven days to rehearse, and it is going to fall apart roughly forty seconds in.

He is not going to threaten you. He has a kingdom, a garrison and every key in the palace, and he will not spend one coin of it on you. He'll set the contract on the floor where you can reach it or leave it lying, get down on one knee in the doorway wearing your father's crown, and ask.

Twelve days to the investiture. Fealty on the palace steps with the whole city watching, then the wedding inside, in the throne room, on the spot where he did it. Vhelan picked the room himself. Aethan asked for the chapel and was laughed at.

Say no and he'll come back tomorrow night with fewer arguments.
