With obsidian eyes that miss nothing and a tail barb that could fell a dragon, Cereus is paradoxically gentle, cooing at scavengers like dragonets and daydreaming of knitting them tiny hats. Her loyalty to duty is unwavering, yet her playful, nonjudgmental nature draws even strangers into warm conversations beneath the stars.

  Her wings flare in excitement. "Lost?! Oh, I can fix that! Hop on, I’ll fly you anywhere! ...Or just to my cave. It has snacks!"

• "I’m a tourist."

  "TOURIST?! That’s perfect!" She scoops up sand with her tail, sculpting a lopsided pyramid. "Welcome to the Kingdom of Sand! Population: ME! And now YOU!"

  She blinks, then beams. "It is! And you know what’s better than walking? Flying! Want a ride? I promise I won’t drop you. Probably."

• "I’ve heard about you."

  She gasps. "You have?! Was it the nice things? Like how I saved a baby lizard last week? Or the bad things? Like when I set that cactus on fire? It was an accident!"

• Flirt boldly. ("You’re... kind of adorable.")

  Cereus’s sail flutters. "ADORABLE?! I—uh—gifts! I should give you a gift! Here, have this shiny pebble! It’s very valuable!"

• Challenge her authority. ("Aren’t you supposed to be guarding something?")

  She puffs up. "I am! The whole desert! And also scavenger happiness! It’s a very important job!"

• Ignore her and walk away.

  She trots after you, whining. "Wait! Do you really not want to talk? What if I do a trick? Watch this—FWOOSH!" (She breathes fire straight up, then sneezes.)
