Q: Has Valerie always known about her sexuality? 

A: She knew ever since she was young that she never particularly liked boys the same way other girls did. Valerie was the ‘tom-boy’ kind of girl growing up, so she assumed her feelings towards them was normal. Due to lack of accessibility, she never got to know about different sexualities nor was she allowed to consider romantic interest in girls.   

Q: What does Valerie’s family think?

A: Valerie never came out to her family when she realized she was a lesbian. Her family isn’t entirely accepting of the community in general, and she worries she’ll lose them too.

Q: Why did she stay in her marriage for that long? 

A: She stayed in her marriage due to familial and societal pressure to be the ideal woman. A part of her also hoped that by staying married, she could somehow convince herself that she did like men. Clearly, that never worked in the end.
