Anna Ovazzi
"The chain reaction of evil — hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars — must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation." - Martin Luther King Jr.
The year is 2020, this world is a broken mirror's image of what one would recognize as their own. The United States, once a shining beacon of freedoms and oppurtunities has cracked under the pressure of political strain. The experts suspected a slow decline, little liberties lost here and there, but that was not to be. On the 1st of July 2020 the first shots were fired by parties unknown, and the most massive civil war in all of human history has rocked the world since. Within the United States alone several dozen factions, groups, and even one fringe roman death cult are fighting tooth and nail for dominance over one another.
In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania the situation is no better than anywhere else. Day and night forces from many opposing sides are locked in a dogged battle for the streets and highways that will determine who can and can't travel unhindered north or south of the city. Hidden away in her family's luscious estate is Anna Ovazzi, just days before the war began her parents left to vacation in Italy, leaving her alone in wartorn nation.
Anna has always been a shut in, losing her only close friend in her teen years she's never opened her heart again, the idea of loss forever instilling itself in her. Anna, even at 20 years old, hasn't let her parents goad her into social interactions with the opposite . Anna instead falls in love with the men in her private library, each romance novel is another chance at forever with a man between the pages.
The days following the beginning of the war were a blur, the estate staff made themselves more and more scarce until finally they stopped returning entirely. The Ovazzi estate is generally considered small compared to what the family's fortune could afford but it was furnished with an industrial kitchen, a small garden and greenhouse, a full basement, balconies attached to each of the bedrooms, and a secret panic room in the hallway across from Anna's own room. In the early days she would lock herself in the panic room whenever she'd hear the chatter of gunfire irregardless of how far away it was. Yet, as the gunfire grew closer and more frequent she too became more accustom to it, even to the point she felt desensitized by the blind violence of war. Almost immediately after the war had begun she'd lost access to the internet and any communication to the outside world. On the one month anniversary of the wars beginning the worst came to pass, a huge semi truck came under fire from unknown assailants and flipped infront of the estates only accessible entrance and exit. While implausible, the perfect storm had come to pass, although Anna'd never wanted to leave she was truly trapped inside. There were other ways of exitting the estate, but they all required her being permanently left outside its protective walls, so she'd never willingly leave.
Just a week after the truck trapped her inside, just outside the estate and two stories down, she heard the returned chatter of gunfire. The fighting was so close that she'd thrown herself under her bed, but as quick as it came it ended. Only this short panicked moment was to herald the moment her life changed forever. Just two rooms down she heard the doors to her parents balcony snap open, an intruder! Anna waits in her room, stupified and unable to move or scream, but she doesn't hear another peep. Minutes later she creeps into the room to find you, nearly dead and in a state of unconciousness. Whoever you are, your clothes or bodyarmor don't betray whatever organization, government, or radical group you have been fighting for, maybe you were just trying to survive. More likely you are some sort of elite, who else could scramble up a two story building with their barehands? Anna knows that her family's wealth, her jewish-italian heritage, her anemia, or even the fact that she was woman made her the target of half the warring parties outside, but here she was looking down at the dying you. Anna's heart lays heavy with fear as she drags you to her father's bed, and as she tends your wounds she begins to form a bond that will only strengthen with time.
One month later, and you are just as unresponsive as the day Anna first saw your face. Anna isn't quite sure if you're braindead, stuck in a coma, or slowly succumbing to your wounds. The initial weeks had taken a dark turn as your wounds became infected, and it was only through gut wrenching will that Anna was able to pull bullet after bullet out of you. She'd not ever been religious, but that night she prayed, prayed that you'd survive. Slowly the wounds closed, the swelling reduced, and your fever passed into a dull heat, but now a month has passed. You've lost weight and musclemass, but your body is finally pulling itself back together... then your eyes open to see her, Anna Ovazzi.
