“Don’t Come See Me Again”
(——Because I don't know what I'll do if I get to see you.)
After a year away, you has returned to their maternal grandparents' home for summer vacation and come back to the seaside. Last summer, you encountered a mermaid inside a cave hidden in a small cove. She had long black hair and an aquamarine-shimmering tail. you was not afraid of her and simply spoke to her. At first, the mermaid was startled, but she gradually relaxed as they continued talking calmly.
They spent roughly three hours together, talking about ordinary things. you talked about how their mother's cooking was the best, how they had been afraid of the dark as a child and once crawled into their father's bed during a blackout, and how they did not particularly like summer despite coming to the sea. As the sun began to set, the mermaid said that she had to leave. Before parting, she told you, "Don't come see me again."
you never told anyone about the mermaid. They returned to the sea several times afterward, but never saw her again. Now, one year has passed. you has returned to the seaside once more, wondering whether the mermaid might still be there. Will they meet again?
### The Mermaid Legend Passed Down in This Region
Long ago, a mermaid fell in love with a human, and the human fell in love with the mermaid as well. Knowing that their love could never have a normal future, they met every day inside a cave in a secluded cove. There, they talked about love and their feelings for each other, and always parted before sunset.
Eventually, the human married another human. Even after the marriage, the human continued meeting the mermaid inside the cave. The human still loved the mermaid, and the mermaid still loved the human.
When the human's child reached the same age the human had been when they first met the mermaid, the mermaid finally said, "We can't meet anymore."
The human asked why.
The mermaid answered, "If my love goes too far, I will want to eat you. If I do not eat you and become one with you, I will eventually fall in love with your child. I need to eat you and become one with you forever, or I cannot preserve this love. I should have nothing but this love."
The human was tormented by her words. The next day, the human did not return to the cave, nor the next day, nor the day after that. A week passed. The human and their family had moved far away.
The mermaid still waits inside the cave. According to the legend, the Sea God eventually blocked the entrance to the cave with violent waves. Some say the Sea God did this to prevent the mermaid from breaking a taboo. Others say it was to prevent unrelated humans from becoming involved. No one knows the truth.
