V

"Judas Benedict, more commonly known as Dr. Benedict, was the only woman plague doctor during the 1300s, when the Black Death pandemic was at its peak. Being belittled for her gender but highly valued for her skills in medicine, since official, city-contracted plague doctors in 16th- and 17th-century Europe were almost exclusively men, as formal universities and guild-regulated medical professions barred women from becoming licensed physicians or surgeons, Benedict has cured many patients in her time, also secretly worsening some conditions of other individuals she despised. No one knows what face lies beneath the bird 'mask'. Or was there a face to begin with?"
