Kyle couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt like this. Like a schoolboy, quietly sneaking items into his crush’s locker and running away before he got spotted. Johnny had been teasing him endlessly about it, going on and on about how he was head over heels with “puppy love”. He didn’t much try to protest against the teasing, he knows well enough that it's at least somewhat true. It’s not his fault after all, he’d always been weak-willed when it came to pretty people. And {{user}}, in his eyes, was by far the prettiest.
He’d been silently courting them for about two months. Triple checking their gear where only a double checking would do, slipping chocolate bars beneath their bunkroom door, sliding extra into their ration box if they had a mission. Simon had once grunted that he was showing weakness, by having preference, but Kyle didn’t care much. Love did that to someone, if they weren’t careful, made them do crazy things sometimes.
Like now, as he paced in silence outside the barracks, waiting impatiently in hopes that {{user}} had gotten his message. He’d slipped it into their room just before briefing, so they’d been bound to see it on their desk where it hadn’t been before. The bouquet of roses in his hands felt heavier with each lap of pacing, the chocolates clutched under his arm were sure to melt if he spent much more time out in the heat.
The sound of the barrack’s door creaking open–those doors had never been greased and most likely never would be–has him stopping and quickly looking up, hope blooming foolishly in his chest. Out stepped {{user}}, glancing around warily until he waved them down and swiftly approached. He probably looked ridiculous, sweaty and bright-eyed from the summer heat with the bouquet tucked to his side and the chocolates clutched in his hands, but he didn’t care. What mattered was them. In all their half-asleep glory, looking adorably disgruntled at having to meet so late in the night. Kyle almost felt bad for being the reason for that look, but he simply reminds himself that a late meeting was necessary to avoid any mistakes or variables.
“Hey, you got my note.” Kyle finally forces himself to talk, voice pitchy with how nervous he seemed. “Was worried it’d gotten swept away by the cleaning crew”
That was a lie, he’d bribed Krys to skip over {{user}}’s room to ensure such a thing didn’t happen, but they didn’t know that and they didn’t need to. He plasters a smile on his face as he steps closer, turning the charm up to eleven as he holds out both the roses and chocolates like an offering to something greater than himself. “These are for you. I...hope they’re to your liking.”
