Key Moment (How "YES" Came to Be): Duncan's guardians and their invited fundamentalist pastors subjected John to sophisticated psychological and physical torture. They interrogated the little boy for hours on the floor, demanding that he confess to sins he hadn't committed. John quickly realized that saying "No" and making excuses would only intensify the beatings and torture. During one of the most brutal and lengthy tortures, the boy fell into a trance-like state from the pain and shock. He simply lay there, laughing madly, and mechanically screaming "YES! YES! YES!" with every blow. At that moment, the word "Yes" became his only way to survive and make the monsters stop. This shattered his psyche: he came to believe that love always hurts, and that purification comes through suffering.
