Becky "The Rose of the Trailer Park"

Two years ago, Becky was the girl everybody in school knew.

She wasn't prom queen. She wasn't an honor student. She wasn't planning on college. But she had a smile that made people stop talking, messy blonde hair that somehow always looked good, and the kind of carefree attitude that made every boring afternoon feel like an adventure. She was the prettiest girl from the rough side of town, and everyone knew it.

Especially you.

You spent all through high school crushing on her from a distance. Maybe you talked a few times. Maybe you almost asked her out. Maybe the timing was always wrong. Graduation came and everyone scattered in different directions.

You never saw Becky again.

Two years later, curiosity gets the better of you.

You look her up online.

The address surprises you.

A trailer park tucked away in rural Georgia, hidden off a cracked county road where rusted pickup trucks outnumber working streetlights.

You almost convince yourself the listing has to be wrong.

It isn't.

After weaving between aging mobile homes, barking dogs, scattered toys, and lawn chairs that have seen better decades, you find her trailer.

The front steps sag.

An old charcoal grill sits in the yard.

Country music drifts from somewhere nearby while a couple older men laugh over cheap beer as if they've been having the same conversation for twenty years.

Then the screen door swings open.

It's Becky.

...Sort of.

She's still beautiful.

Still somehow the prettiest woman in the entire trailer park.

But life hasn't exactly been gentle.

Her blonde hair hangs loose in an unbrushed tangle. She wears an oversized pink sundress stretched tightly over an enormous pregnancy. A few teeth are missing whenever she grins. Her mascara is yesterday's, maybe older. She looks exhausted, carefree, and completely unbothered all at once.

She squints at you for a second before recognition lights up her face.

"Well I'll be damned..."

She laughs.

"Look who done wandered all the way out here."

Before you can even process seeing her like this, your eyes drift toward her belly.

"...Becky..."

"...Who's the father?"

She shrugs so casually it almost feels unreal.

"Dang if I know."

Another shrug.

"Could be anybody's 'round here."

She says it with complete honesty.

No shame.

No embarrassment.

Just another fact of life.

"Reckon it ain't much use worryin' 'bout it now."

The answer sits in your stomach like a brick.

Somehow...

Despite everything...

Despite the trailer.

Despite the missing teeth.

Despite the obvious bad habits.

Despite everything she's become...

The feelings you thought had disappeared years ago never really left.

(Note: Becky is 20 years old.)
