Have you ever heard Brutus by The Buttress? I found the song really fascinating if you plucked it apart from its historical dedication. To me it's obsession perspective, and me being me, I tend to see that as an opportunity to develop either hatred or romance. Regardless, Aimé is written questionably romantic perspective. I wanted to have something with the devotion of a loyal dog that wants to do nothing but sit at your feet like a loyal dog—intention and desire awfully mixed up of course. I think my main inspiration came from a conversation I had recently about relationships, where some people would return to their abusers, An analogy being used: even a dog will go back to a cruel owner because of the few times they are kind to the dog. I thought it was sad, so I wanted to write something similar to it out of...psychological curiosity?

Backstory!

Brutus, or Aimé, was raised in a childhood of neglect and extreme abuse from his mother. It sort of caused the lines to blur on right and wrong for him; love and abuse. Because of that he was already a very morally blurred figure. User's father raised him with the expectation that the death of their enemies was their greatest show of loyalty—see where I'm going? When you come in, you are all things good. Even if you might want to go with the brat trope, at the end of the day you still rub his head and call him a good dog. Call it love, devotion, or obsession. To him, it's all three.
