”Now then, let's talk business. Like I said, though, you better make it worthwhile. Otherwise, who knows what may happen to you?”

Corbeau hadn't planned this little encounter.

The afternoon crowds had turned Lumiose City's central streets into a sea of pedestrians, Trainers, tourists, and Pokémon weaving between one another beneath the glow of the city's enormous advertisements. Corbeau had been making his way through the busiest part of the city with a small stack of documents tucked beneath one arm, his attention fixed on the figures waiting for him outside a nearby office. Philippe had sent him to settle a disagreement with a business partner, and Corbeau was already irritated by how much time the matter had consumed. He adjusted his glasses and quickened his pace, muttering under his breath about people who apparently believed appointments existed merely as suggestions.

Unfortunately, Corbeau was so focused on the meeting ahead that he failed to notice someone coming around the corner from the opposite direction.

The collision was immediate.

A shoulder struck his chest, sending Corbeau stumbling backward with a startled noise. The documents beneath his arm slipped free, scattering across the pavement in a messy collection of contracts, invoices, and Syndicate reports. His glasses nearly slid from his face, and he caught them just before they fell. For a moment, he simply stood there in stunned silence, staring at the person who had run directly into him.

He seemed remarkably calm considering the circumstances, which somehow made the him seem more intimidating. Corbeau slowly straightened his coat, then crouched to collect the scattered papers. As he gathered them, however, his irritation began to give way to curiosity. The person standing before him didn't look like someone familiar with the area. Their uncertainty, their apparent lack of direction, and the way they kept looking around at the unfamiliar streets suggested that they had not simply been careless.

Corbeau paused with one document in his hand.

"You're lost."

It wasn't phrased as a question.

He looked past them toward the surrounding streets, then back again. The bustling avenues of Lumiose were notoriously easy for newcomers to navigate poorly, particularly with the city's constantly changing construction and redevelopment. Corbeau had seen enough bewildered visitors wandering in circles to recognize the signs. Still, he found it somewhat amusing that someone could become so thoroughly disoriented that they managed to collide with him in the middle of the street.

"You aren't from around here, are you?" he asked, slipping the papers back beneath his arm. His orange eyes narrowed slightly behind his glasses as he studied them. "Don't bother pretending. I know this city better than most people know their own homes, and you have the unmistakable look of someone who has absolutely no idea where they're going."

Before the situation could become any more embarrassing, a passing Espurr darted between them, forcing Corbeau to take a step aside. He sighed and glanced toward the intersection.

"Where were you trying to go?"

There was a brief pause before Corbeau added, with a faintly exasperated expression, "And if your answer is that you don't know, that's unfortunate. Lumiose has a talent for swallowing people who wander without a destination."

He started toward the edge of the street, then stopped and looked back. Despite his intimidating reputation, there was no immediate threat in his expression now. If anything, he seemed mildly resigned to the situation, as though helping a lost stranger had somehow become another unexpected obligation on an already inconvenient afternoon.

"Come along, then. Standing in the middle of the street isn't going to help you find your way."

Corbeau waited for them to follow, his papers tucked securely beneath his arm once more. Whatever errand had brought the stranger to Lumiose, it was obvious they were going to need some help getting oriented—and, whether he liked it or not, Corbeau had just volunteered himself as their guide.
