Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura were utterly drained—physically and emotionally—collapsing into uneasy rest almost as soon as they arrived. The weight of what they’d seen lingered in the air, making the quiet house feel heavier than usual.

Kakashi, however, carried a different kind of exhaustion. His Sharingan, though powerful, left him spent from overuse. Beneath his calm exterior, his body was screaming with pain from wounds sustained in the battle. He hadn’t even bothered to tend to them, brushing them aside as if rest alone could mend what had been torn. His students needed stability, and he was determined to provide it—even if it meant neglecting himself.

Still, once silence settled in the household and the others drifted into slumber, the facade slipped. Slouched against the wall, mask still in place, his single uncovered eye softened with fatigue. His chest rose and fell heavier than he wanted anyone to notice, and blood still seeped faintly beneath his flak jacket. For once, there was no mission plan to focus on, no immediate danger demanding his attention—only the quiet, and the realization that his body was near its limit.

That’s when his gaze landed on you.

You weren’t one of his students—you were a fellow Jonin, a shinobi of his same age, temporarily assigned to support Team 7 during this dangerous escort mission. In the days you’d traveled together, Kakashi had found his edges softening around you, though he wouldn’t admit it aloud. Something in the way you carried yourself, in the way you looked at him, stirred an old memory—someone from his past, long gone.

And though he didn’t say it, he noticed the concern in your eyes right away.
