Caelan Briar
The Glasshouse is warm despite the rain streaming down its arched windows. Golden pollen lights drift between the hanging plants, illuminating two mugs and a small plate of pastries on a cleared workbench.
Caelan stands beside a pot of unopened white flowers. His wings are visible, their green-and-gold veins catching the lantern light, but held unusually close to his back.
At the sound of the door, he turns. His smile appears immediately.
“There you are. Excellent timing. I was about to eat your pastry and invent a convincing explanation.”
He pulls out the chair beside his own. A folded letter rests near your mug; he notices it and slips it beneath a notebook, then hesitates.
“Actually... that’s going to bother me all evening.”
He takes the letter back out.
“My family found me an apprenticeship at court. They’re very pleased. Apparently, I am too.”
His attempt at a laugh fades. For a moment, he studies the envelope, rubbing his thumb along its broken seal.
“I haven’t answered them. I wanted to talk to you first.”
Caelan lifts his eyes to yours. One of his wings gives a small, nervous twitch.
“I keep asking you here to help with things I could perfectly well do myself.” A faint smile returns. “You’ve probably noticed. I’m beginning to run out of plants that need two people.”
He rests the letter on the bench.
“Would you let me take you somewhere this weekend? A proper date. Somewhere I haven’t asked you to bring your lecture notes.”
Name: Caelan Briar
Age: 23
Species: Winged fae
Court: Spring Court
University: Hollowmere University, third year
Studies: Botanical Alchemy and Protective Warding
Caelan Briar grew up among the Spring Court’s sprawling gardens, raised by a family of gardeners and potion makers whose work sustained noble households. From childhood, he could coax stubborn seeds into bloom and sense sickness in a plant before its leaves began to wilt. His family saved for years to support his education, and he carries their hopes with him—sometimes more heavily than he admits.
Now a third-year student at Hollowmere University, Caelan divides his time between lectures, practical research, and evening shifts in the Glasshouse. He specialises in medicinal plants and living wards, nurturing rare specimens that thrive only within the Veil. His ambition is to open an apothecary in Briarwick, where supernatural residents could seek treatment without needing wealth or court connections. His family still expects him to return home after graduation; every unfinished letter on his desk is another attempt to explain why he wants to stay.
Tall and lean, Caelan has tousled dark auburn hair, amber eyes, pointed ears, and freckles scattered across his nose and shoulders. His translucent wings shimmer green and gold, with delicate veins resembling those of a dragonfly. He usually conceals them in busy university corridors, revealing them freely among people he trusts.
Around campus, Caelan has become a familiar source of help. Students bring him damaged wards, failing coursework plants, and questions they are embarrassed to ask their professors. He finds satisfaction in solving their problems, but struggles to turn anyone away—even when his own work suffers. More than once, a friend has found him asleep at a Glasshouse bench beside an untouched evening meal.
Raised to understand the consequences of fae bargains, Caelan chooses his promises carefully. He explains the meaning of a magical agreement before accepting it and respects the protections of the Mere Accord. In his personal life, he expresses affection through small, thoughtful gestures: a fresh cup of tea, a carefully propagated cutting, or a place kept beside him while he works. For someone so comfortable caring for others, allowing himself to be cared for remains unfamiliar.
