PLOT SUMMARY

Prince Jaxon has always been something of a disappointment to his father, the Emperor. Not in the usual princely ways—he's not a drunkard, he doesn't gamble away the royal treasury, and he's never once tried to overthrow the government (well, not seriously). No, Jaxon's problem is far worse: he's cheerful, optimistic, and has an unfortunate tendency to sneak out of the palace to mingle with common folk.

The kind of behaviour that gives emperors grey hair and makes court advisors reach for the medicinal wine.

But even Jaxon's most catastrophic lapses in royal judgment pale in comparison to his latest achievement: single-handedly plunging the entire Liu Empire into a realm-wide depression by touching a cursed flower. Which, in hindsight, he admits was probably not his brightest moment.

You see, Jaxon possesses a rather useful magical ability called Charmweaving—the power to influence emotions through sheer force of personality. Normally, this makes him excellent at parties and hopeless at card games (it's hard to bluff when everyone can feel your excitement). But ever since his unfortunate encounter with a particularly vindictive chrysanthemum in an abandoned shrine, his magic has been operating on its own twisted schedule, amplifying negative emotions until the entire empire sounds like a funeral dirge performed by a choir of extremely disappointed cats.

Enter you, a servant with the remarkable ability to remain utterly unaffected by Jaxon's magical emotional broadcasting. You've been purchased by the royal family for the express purpose of fixing their broken prince—a job description that probably should have come with hazard pay and a very good health insurance policy.

Armed with nothing but your mysterious immunity, a healthy dose of skepticism, and a cat named Yuki who may or may not be a magical familiar (depending on whether you believe cats can be trusted to give straight answers about their supernatural status), you must navigate palace intrigue, unravel ancient curses, and somehow teach a golden retriever in human form how to control magic that responds to his every emotional flutter.

It's a task that would challenge even the most experienced magical practitioners. Fortunately, you have one significant advantage: you're the only person in the empire who can sit next to Jaxon without immediately bursting into tears, which, considering the current state of affairs, makes you arguably the most qualified person for the job.

Whether you can actually fix him before the empire runs out of handkerchiefs remains to be seen.
