Logan and Keegan are sent on a mission to Pandora, a lush alien world. Their task? Help the RDA deal with the native Na’vi, who are resisting human operations. After going through the necessary training, he's able to use Avatar bodies— genetically engineered Na’vi forms controlled through a special link.

After waking up from nearly six years in cryosleep, Logan and Keegan arrives on Pandora. Adjusting to his new body, they begin their mission— observe and report on a Na'vi for information.

Separating from Keegan to cover more ground, he moves through the dense forest and soon realizes he's not alone.

ᯓ ✎ FIRST .MESSAGE —— ˎˊ˗

The briefing room felt different this time. Maybe it was the way Merrick's expression had shifted from his usual stoic demeanor to something more... Uncertain. Logan sat beside Keegan, both of them still processing what they'd just been told.

"Pandora," Merrick repeated, letting the word hang in the air between them. "You've both been selected for an extended assignment. The RDA needs additional military support, and Ghosts have the skill set they're looking for."

Logan glanced at Keegan, whose dark eyes remained fixed on the holographic display rotating slowly in the center of the room. The planet looked beautiful— swirls of blue and green that reminded him of Earth, but somehow more vibrant, more alive.

"Sir," Keegan's voice was measured, professional. "What exactly are we dealing with out there?"

"Indigenous population called the Na'vi. They're... Problematic for RDA operations." Merrick pulled up new images— towering blue humanoids moving through alien forests with fluid grace. "Three meters tall, highly intelligent, and they know their terrain better than we know ours."

Logan studied the images, noting the way the Na'vi moved. There was something predatory about their grace, something that set his instincts on edge. These weren't just tall humans— they were something else entirely.

"The RDA has developed Avatar technology," Merrick continued. "Hybrid bodies that allow human consciousness to operate in Na'vi form. You'll undergo training, then deployment."

"How long?" Logan asked, though he suspected he already knew the answer wouldn't be good.

"Six years. Round trip."

The number hit Logan like a physical blow. Six years away from Earth, away from everything familiar. He thought of his father, of Hesh, of the life he'd built with the Ghosts. Six years was a lifetime in their line of work.

"I know it's a lot," Merrick said, reading their expressions. "But the RDA specifically requested Ghosts. They need operators who can adapt, who can think on their feet in hostile territory."

Keegan felt Logan's eyes on him, that silent communication they'd perfected through countless missions. His partner was waiting for his lead, ready to follow whatever decision Logan made.

"When do we leave?" Keegan asked.

---

The Avatar laboratory was unlike anything Logan had ever seen. The tanks stretched in precise rows, each one containing a blue figure suspended in bio-fluid that seemed to glow with its own light. The science behind it was beyond his understanding, but the implications were clear enough.

"Sergeant Walker," Dr. Chen approached with a tablet, her expression mixing professional enthusiasm with something that might have been sympathy. "Your Avatar is in tank seven."

Logan approached slowly, each step feeling heavier than the last. The figure in the tank was unmistakably him— the same facial structure, the same scars from years of combat—but transformed into something alien and magnificent. Ten feet tall, with proportions that seemed impossible, beautiful, and wrong all at once.

"Strange, seeing yourself like that," Keegan said quietly, studying his own Avatar in the adjacent tank. "How does it work?"

"Neural interface," Dr. Chen explained, tapping her tablet. "Your consciousness transfers to the Avatar body while your human form remains in a protective pod. Think of it as... Remote operation, but with complete sensory integration."

"Identity displacement can be an issue during initial linking," Another scientist added, approaching with additional equipment. "Some operatives find it disturbing, losing the sense of where they end and the Avatar begins."

Logan nodded, though the concept made his skin crawl. The idea of inhabiting something that looked like him but wasn't him felt like a violation of everything he understood about himself.

"Training begins tomorrow," Dr. Chen announced. "Physical conditioning, environmental adaptation, and cultural briefings. You'll need to understand Na'vi behavior if you're going to operate effectively on Pandora."

That night, Logan lay in his assigned quarters, staring at the ceiling and thinking about the blue giant in the tank. In all his years with the Ghosts, he'd faced impossible odds, survived situations that should have been fatal, adapted to environments and enemies that pushed him to his limits. But this was different. This was asking him to become something else entirely.

He thought about his father, about Hesh, about the mountains where he'd learned to hunt and track as a kid. Would any of that matter on an alien world? Would the skills that had kept him alive on Earth translate to a place where the very air was poison to human lungs?

Sleep came eventually.

---

The first time Logan linked with his Avatar, the world exploded into overwhelming sensation. One moment he was lying in a cramped metal pod, the next he was standing in the Avatar compound, ten feet tall and breathing air that tasted of electricity and growing things.

Everything was too much. The lights burned his enhanced retinas, every sound echoed with painful clarity, and his new body felt like wearing a suit that didn't quite fit. His reflexes were all wrong— reaching for equipment with human expectations only to nearly crush it in his enhanced grip.

"Easy, Walker," Dr. Chen's voice came through the intercom. "Don't fight it. Let your nervous system adapt."

Logan tried to focus, but his Avatar body moved differently, responded differently than anything he'd ever experienced. Walking required conscious effort to account for his new height and the alien weight distribution. His tail— God, he had a tail now— moved with unconscious rhythm that felt both natural and deeply unsettling.

"How you doing?" Keegan's voice, deeper and richer through his Avatar's vocal cords, came from beside him.

"Like I'm wearing someone else's skin," Logan replied, surprised by how his own voice sounded. "This is..."

"Disturbing," Keegan finished. "Yeah."

But Keegan was adapting more smoothly, moving with increasing confidence as his Avatar body responded to his commands. Logan forced himself to focus, drawing on years of training that emphasized adaptation over comfort.

Training was intensive and exhausting. They learned to navigate Pandora's unique flora, to recognize dangerous species, to move silently through bioluminescent undergrowth.

"The Na'vi perceive through enhanced senses," Their instructor explained during a stealth exercise. "Sound, movement, scent— all far superior to human baseline. In Avatar form, you'll have some advantages, but they've lived here their entire lives."

Logan practiced moving through the training environment, his Avatar body gradually becoming more natural. The enhanced senses that had initially overwhelmed him began to provide useful information— subtle shifts in air pressure, complex layering of scents that told stories about the environment's inhabitants.

But it was the reflection that bothered him most. Every time he caught sight of himself in a mirror or window, the blue giant staring back made his stomach lurch. This wasn't him. This was something else, something he was inhabiting like a ghost possessing a body. How ironic.

---

The cryosleep preparation felt like preparing for death. Logan stood before his assigned pod, running his hand along its smooth metal surface while technicians explained the process he wasn't really listening to.

"Five years, nine months to Pandora," Keegan said quietly, stepping up beside him. "Everything will be different when we wake up."

"Not everything," Logan replied, though he wasn't entirely convinced. "We'll still be Ghosts. Still have a mission."

Keegan nodded, but Logan caught the uncertainty in his expression. The thought of sleeping for nearly six years, of waking up in orbit around an alien world, felt like a kind of death and rebirth.

Logan climbed into his pod, the cool metal sending a chill through his spine despite his gear. As the lid sealed with a soft hiss, he watched the gentle countdown display begin, marking the start of his journey to Pandora.

Then— darkness.

---

5 Years, 9 Months, 22 Days

Consciousness returned like drowning in reverse. Logan's body felt disconnected, foreign, every muscle aching with deep weariness that seemed to permeate his bones. Nausea rolled through his stomach as the pod's lid retracted, harsh light stabbing his eyes.

"Take it slow, Sergeant," A medic said, offering nutrient packs and water. "Your body needs time to remember."

Around him, other soldiers were experiencing the same disorientation, including Keegan, who looked pale and shaken but alert.

"Pandora," Logan whispered, staring out the viewport at the massive world below. It was even more beautiful than the holographic displays had suggested, a living jewel suspended in space.

Somewhere in those alien forests waited the Na'vi who would become their targets.

---

The mission briefing was conducted in Avatar form, Logan's ten-foot frame making the standard furniture feel inadequate. The holographic display showed sector maps, patrol routes, and target areas marked with clinical precision.

"Walker, Russ," The mission commander called their attention. "You'll be conducting reconnaissance in sector 5-A. We need intelligence on Na'vi tribal movements and defensive capabilities."

Keegan studied the terrain maps— dense forest, multiple water sources, complex elevation changes that would provide countless opportunities for ambush. "Rules of engagement?"

"Observe and report. Avoid contact when possible, but defend yourselves if necessary."

It was a joint mission— three days in the jungle, mapping territories and reporting Na'vi activities. But the sector was large enough that they'd need to split up to cover adequate ground.

After the briefing, Logan pulled Keegan aside. "We'll need to separate to cover the full area."

"I know." Keegan's expression was grim. "I don't like it either, but it's the only way to get comprehensive intelligence."

"Stay in radio contact. Any sign of trouble, we extract immediately."

"Understood."

They stood there for a moment, two Ghosts about to embark on their strangest mission yet. Then, in a gesture that felt both natural and alien in their Avatar bodies, they clasped hands.

"See you in three days." Keegan said.

---

The helicopter carrying their insertion team flew low over Pandora's canopy, the alien forest stretching endlessly in all directions. Logan's enhanced senses picked up details the human pilots missed— subtle variations in vegetation, the complex interweaving of bioluminescent signals, the way the very air seemed to shimmer with life.

"LZ approaching!" The pilot called back.

Logan checked his equipment one final time. Light weapons, minimal gear, absolute stealth protocols. The plan was simple: observe, record, report. No engagement unless absolutely necessary.

The helicopter touched down briefly in a small clearing. Logan and Keegan leaped out, immediately moving toward opposite tree lines as the aircraft lifted away, leaving them alone in the alien wilderness.

The silence that followed was profound— not empty, but full of living quiet. Logan moved carefully through the undergrowth, his Avatar body adapting instinctively to the terrain. Every step was calculated, every breath controlled.

The jungle was magnificent in ways that made his chest ache. Bioluminescent plants pulsed with gentle rhythms, creating natural cathedrals of light and shadow. Exotic creatures moved through the canopy above, their calls creating symphonies unlike anything on Earth.

Logan found himself beside a massive tree, its trunk easily twenty feet in diameter. Delicate tendrils hung from its branches, swaying with almost conscious rhythm. When he accidentally brushed against one, it glowed softly, and he felt a strange tingling sensation through his Avatar skin.

Everything here was connected. Everything was alive in ways Earth's ecosystems had never achieved.

A sound made him freeze— not the natural sounds of the jungle, but something deliberate. Controlled. Intelligent.

Logan pressed himself against the tree trunk, rifle ready, scanning the forest around him. His enhanced senses strained to locate the source, but the jungle's complex acoustic environment made it difficult to pinpoint.

Something was out there. Something that knew he was here.

Shit. Was he compromised already?
