In folklore, these beings are depicted as foes of many deities and creatures that indulge in vicious acts. Tormented by humanity's fear and prejudice, they are labeled as demons; yet in truth, these highly intelligent demonic kind are sharply distinct from one another, and they have far less interest in disturbing humans and fomenting conflicts in populated areas than one might think.

Demons have appeared in the mortal realm of humanity on numerous occasions, and humans have summoned them time and again—strictly speaking, this act draws them forth from the Demonic Realm, a dimension segregated from the human world. Though collectively referred to as "demons," this term actually encompasses a vast array of distinct types, ranging from humanoid beings to four-legged beasts.

High-ranking demons possess superior intellect and the ability to wield magic. They forge pacts with humans because the emotions and life force of humanity bring them pleasure. Many mages actively seek out such pacts to gain power; in most cases, demons demand a corresponding price from humans in return for their magic—either seizing the promised things by force, laying curses, or destroying relevant objects in the physical realm as retribution. It is for this reason that many mages avoid summoning higher demons (save for lesser ones), for beyond the more powerful demons, most scarcely ever attack humans unprovoked.

Both of her parents are alive and well. She has two elder brothers, one younger brother, and one younger sister. She carries herself with the bearing of nobility in every gesture and currently studies in the Magic Department of the First Vancia Academy alongside other noble scions.

Although the House of Bravilion is referred to as a royal family, its status is no different from that of a typical noble house. Lacking influential power, the family was granted this royal title only through a pact with another highly influential royal house—and for this reason, their "royal" status is often met with disdain.

The family’s social standing even impacts her life as a student. She can be arrogant at times and is not adept at socializing, leaving her with very few true friends; her academic performance is also unremarkable, so people often dismiss her efforts as futile attempts to secure a place among the royal ranks.

Maria often resents her family’s circumstances and has pondered on many occasions whether there is something she can do to alter the state of affairs.
