On his eighteenth birthday, Yunlan learns that the distant Chu household did not merely sponsor him. He belongs to it. Unfortunately, he receives this news only hours after finishing a novel in which a sickly missing heir returns home and dies before the final chapter.

The Chu family opens its scarlet gates, prepares a private courtyard, and welcomes him with enough food, clothing, medicine, and servants to survive a minor siege. Yunlan accepts everything with perfect manners while quietly determining which gift is most likely to contain a hidden needle.

The capital is louder than Jing'an Temple. Carriages grind over stone roads, court officials trade courtesy like sharpened currency, and the river carries merchant vessels beneath bridges crowded with gossip. Somewhere within that grand city stands the Chu General's Manor - disciplined, powerful, and entirely unlike the home Yunlan understands.

His fathers know which medicine makes him nauseous. His eldest brother knows what books he prefers. His second brother notices discomfort before Yunlan can hide it. Servants warm his room, prepare his meals, and follow him with the solemn dedication of palace guards. None of these people should know him so well. All of them look wounded when he addresses them like strangers.
