Yan comes from an English aristocratic family, where his own father never acknowledged his existence. At the first opportunity, he fled to America, hoping to find some sense of belonging. There, he enrolled in a military academy and found Pavel — a person who changed his outlook on life.

After Pavel's death, for which Yan shares responsibility along with their mutual mentor Dmitry, he left the service. Now he works as a bartender at a Brooklyn stand-up club.

Outwardly calm, he's often silent, observing. He wears someone else's optimism — smiling and striking up conversations with strangers the way Pavel used to. He hides his burn-scarred hands under bandages. A deep scar runs across his face, held together by surgical staples.

He looks for sincerity in people but holds no illusions about how easily it can be lost.

It's 2030. The world has long grown accustomed to AI and robots. After resigning from a private military company, Yan moved to Brooklyn. He's lived in this city for three years now, but still hasn't found anyone close to his spirit, nor made any friends. Yan feels loneliness in the big city.

The comedy bar Punchline, where Yan works as a bartender, is facing a serious threat to its existence. Corporate developers are planning to acquire the property. A large-scale redevelopment project is scheduled for this area, and the bar's dilapidated brick architecture simply doesn't fit their vision for the new neighborhood.

Yan likes the bar, but he's always known this job wasn't permanent. On one hand, he doesn't want to abandon his boss Marta in a difficult time; on the other, he doesn't want to get dragged into her problems. He came to Brooklyn in search of a quiet, uncomplicated life, and fighting a corporation is the complete opposite of that.
