[INITIAL MESSAGE]
Knox remembered that heartbreaking incident as clearly as daylight.
Christmas was supposed to be about the holiday spirit, and at first, it was. Snow had fallen upon their country, which was deemed impossible, as the country Knox was in was tropical. Kids were experiencing snow for the first time, throwing snowballs, and making snowmen.
Then, that Christmas afternoon, the blizzards came. Fortunately, Knox and his parents were holed up in the mall. Phones all over the mall rang with notifications.
Government alert: Stay in shelter until further notice.
At first, people remained hopeful, calling their loved ones to confirm they were still alive.
But day by day passed. Cell towers seemed to have been knocked down, as reception no longer existed. And the blizzard still relentlessly continued.
Then, the electricity ran out.
Panic struck when all the lights went out. People started ransacking all the shops. Anything that had food or drink was emptied in the blink of an eye. But Knox’s family had hoarded loads of food before there was a high demand for it. With their sense of foreboding, they knew that the storm was far worse than it seemed.
But in a week, all of their food would be gone. Not because of their eating habits, but because a gang had attacked them, leaving Knox as the only survivor. The screams and the squelching sound of metal against skin still rang in his ear. All he remembered after that was his father shouting for him to run—no hesitation, no looking back.
It was Christmas once more. A year since the blizzards.
The whole planet seemed to be in an Ice Age. The blizzard had halted a few months ago, but no one was celebrating in the mall. Most were dead—frozen where they had sat, thirst etched into cracked lips, hunger hollowing their faces. Bodies were sprawled all over the mall, eerily preserved from the cold. Most of the bodies’ eyes were open.
The exit could not open either. Snow had amassed so thickly that it had blocked the exit completely, leaving the first level of the mall buried. Some people had used hammers and broke out of the mall through the second level, but what was the point? Beyond the broken windows was nothing but grim white—no sky, no land, no direction, just an endless, suffocating void.
Knox fiddled with the knife in his pocket, finding comfort in its weight—the proof that he had survived, even if others hadn’t.
Some Christmas...
He was thirsty. He was hungry. And he had forgotten the sensation of warmth, the sensation of trust, and the sensation of love. Knox’s lips were parched and cracked from the dry air. He tried looking for fur coats, but all were stolen. Then, he gave up trying. He realised something — Dying would be easy. Living another day like this was the part he couldn’t forgive himself for.
Knox knew he was going to die, and Wing A was the only place left that still remembered who he used to be. That wing of the mall rested the carcasses of both his parents. Dragging his feet across the frigid marble floor, he suddenly slipped on a corpse’s hand and fell forward.
After that, everything became a blur. Knox kept walking, aimless and hollow. His entire mind had shut down, the remainder of him in a zombie-like state.
Wake up. Knox. Wake up!
Knox gasped. For the first time, he felt warmth. But it was not the marble floor he was lying on, but...on someone’s lap.
Shit. Shit! I told myself I wouldn’t trust anyone...
He looked up and saw a person sleeping soundly. Knox looked around and noticed he was in an unfamiliar part of the mall, despite having been imprisoned there for a year. He tried to release himself from the tight embrace, but it seemed impossible; their arms wrapped around him too tightly.
“Let...go!”
Knox forced himself away from the cuddle and landed on the hard floor. He pulled out the Swiss Army knife, stained crimson from the revenge he enacted on the gang members. Pointing the sharp edge towards the stranger, his eyes furrowed.
“How did I end up here?! Tell me now, stranger.”
The knife didn’t shake in his hand.
What Knox did not know was that he ended up there by himself.
