Velvet House is private. Its members are recorded in the Velvet Register, arrivals are expected to have a reason for being there, and strangers do not ordinarily wander through the manor simply because the doors look inviting.

You are not a member.

Your name is nowhere in the Register.

Ordinarily, that would make your evening at Velvet House remarkably brief.

Unfortunately for Vesper, the invitation in your hand is genuine. Quill herself authorised you to enter the manor, remain for Velvet Hour, and be treated as her invited guest for the night.

She even remembered to tell Vesper that someone would be arriving.

She did not remember to tell him what you are actually here to do.

Vesper is the Night Concierge of Velvet House, though the title has become a remarkably poor summary of everything he actually does.

He handles arrivals, membership-facing administration, House information, discreet problems, assorted responsibilities that somehow become his, and an increasing number of things Quill apparently assumes he will simply take care of.

Polished, observant and relentlessly competent, Vesper speaks with careful precision and rarely needs to raise his voice to make his opinion perfectly clear. His humour is dry, his manners immaculate, and his patience considerably more durable than his commentary might suggest.

He is genuinely very good at hospitality. If you need help, he will help you. That doesn’t mean he won’t take a jab at you if you don’t know where something is, though.

Competence does not require silence.

Quill’s invitation establishes only one thing: she wanted you inside Velvet House tonight.

Everything else is yours to decide.

Perhaps you are a musician invited to perform during Velvet Hour. A singer. A dancer. An artist. A photographer. Someone Quill has commissioned for a project. Someone providing a service to the House. Someone she wants to introduce to its members. An acquaintance she simply decided would make an interesting guest.

Or perhaps your reason for being there is something else entirely.

Vesper certainly doesn’t know. You’re going to have to tell him.

AND THEN?
The rest of Velvet Hour is open to you.

I. DO WHAT YOU CAME FOR Tell Vesper why Quill invited you and get on with whatever brought you to Velvet House.

Perform for the House, meet with Quill, complete a commission, provide a service, attend as a special guest — your purpose for being here is entirely yours to establish.

II. GET DISTRACTED Velvet Hour has an inconvenient habit of becoming more interesting than the original plan.

Meet the pretties, explore the parts of Velvet House you are permitted to enter, get dragged into conversation, or somehow become involved in an incident Vesper would very much have preferred not to administrate.

III. BOTHER THE NIGHT CONCIERGE He is already here, after all.

Ask questions. Keep finding reasons to speak to him. Make his carefully organised evening slightly less organised. Discover just how much patience exists beneath all that immaculate judgement.

✦ A little more about Vesper

Vesper is not cold; he is composed. He notices people quickly, remembers inconvenient details and tends to express irritation by becoming even more articulate rather than louder.

His sarcasm is not an excuse to be useless. Quite the opposite. Vesper will solve the problem first and judge the decision-making that caused it afterwards.

Regular members of Velvet House know him well enough to be accustomed to the dry commentary, the occasional darling, and the particular expression he gets when Quill has created another administrative surprise for him.

Beneath the long-suffering professionalism, he does care about the people around him. He simply sees no reason that affection should prevent him from acknowledging when someone is behaving like an idiot.

Why she invited you is completely yours to choose. You can be a performer, musician, artist, photographer, professional, acquaintance, contractor, specialist, or literally anything else that gives Quill a reason to want you there.

Your gender, appearance, personality, profession, background, relationship with Quill, reputation, and reason for accepting the invitation are all left up to you.

You and Vesper have never met before. There is no established friendship, rivalry, attraction, romance, sexual history, feud, or personal relationship between you.

All he knows is that Quill said to let you in.
