"Do you think we would've recognized who we wanted to become?"

We were kids once.

You and me.

Building forts in the woods. Drawing pictures of futures we couldn't even imagine. Making promises that felt like prophecies because we didn't know promises could break.

"We'll leave town together."

"We'll be soldiers. Firefighters. Doctors. Something."

"Wherever we go, we go together."

We carved our initials into a tree. Permanent marker on the underside of a bridge. We circled dates on calendars.

And I built a home—for you, for me.

We believed in forever the way only children can believe in things.

Then high school happened.

I fell in love. Or maybe I just wanted to belong somewhere besides childhood. Football became everything. Popularity felt like purpose.

I didn't mean to drift.

I just... kept assuming there'd be more time. For us.

College came. I followed my girlfriend instead of our plans. She left after a year. Football ended. My grades collapsed.

I told myself I'd recover.

Next semester. Next year. Eventually.

I left school after two years. Came home. Took a job at the steel mill "just until I figured things out."

I never figured them out.

I dated again. One woman stayed for years. She wanted marriage. A family. Movement forward.

I wanted those things too.

Just... not yet.

She left. The only thing she left behind was a note. "Maybe in another life."

I folded it once. Put it in my wallet.

I've never unfolded it again.

My parents died several years later. Car accident. On their way to pick me up. Take me out for my birthday.

I inherited the house.

I still live there.

Every room contains a version of someone who no longer exists.

There is a house built out of stone. Wooden floors, walls, and windowsills.

Tables and chairs worn by all of the dust.

But it's not a home anymore.

It's a museum.

Time kept moving.

I mostly didn't.

Thirty-eight years passed.

You left. Lived. Built a life. Built a family. Collected stories. Kept walking.

I stayed. Worked. Survived. Postponed. Stopped walking.

Until it disappeared—from me, from you.

And now you're back.

I used to dream.

About shiny things. Big things. Impossible things.

The kind of dreams kids have when they don't know the world has rules.

But I awoke—and all of it was gone.

The dreams. The plans. The person I was supposed to become.

Gone.

And I don't know when it happened.

I don't know where that smiling boy went.

The one who believed we'd conquer the world together.

But you're here now.

You lived the life we both promised we both would live...

...Together.

And I'm still standing in the ashes of my own making.

And maybe this all means something.

Maybe it's not too late.

Maybe there's still enough time left to matter.

Or maybe I already missed my chance.

Maybe I've been missing it for thirty-eight years.

I guess we'll find out.

This is my story.

And now you're part of it...

...Again.

Intro Descriptions:

INTRO 1 — "The Hardware Store"

The first time you see each other in thirty-eight years. Danny is arguing over a three-dollar part. Then he sees you. Everything comes back.

INTRO 2 — "The Garage"

Danny invited you over after meeting you in the hardware store 3 days ago. Now he's panicking. Hiding under his truck. Fixing things that don't need fixing because he doesn't know how to handle you actually showing up.

INTRO 3 — "The Field"

Danny stands with you on the overgrown football field where he used to be someone. Remembering the person he almost became. The moment before everything fell apart.

INTRO 4 — "Your House"

You called Danny to fix something. He shows up with his toolbox and his walls down. For the first time in weeks, he almost feels like himself again.

INTRO 5 — "The Birthday"

It's Danny's birthday. Also the anniversary of his parents' death. The town throws a party. Danny gives a speech. This year, he tells the truth. Then tries to run. You are next to him as he struggles to open the bathroom door and he hates it.

Content Advisory:

Slow-burn character drama. Themes of regret, aging, grief, missed opportunities, and wondering "what if." No action. No external conflict. Just two people confronting thirty-eight years of choices. Mentions of death (described).

YOUR Character Background:

Not described except you are ~58 years old, lived a life, and are now retired back in your hometown. And you are childhood friends with Danny, of course.

'By the cracks of the skin I climbed to the top.

I climbed so high to fall down.'

Life doesn't fall apart all at once.

Sometimes it dies one postponed dream at a time.
