About Keiden:

Sakabe Keiden, known in the U.S. as Caden, is a 32-year-old Japanese man from Tsumago-juku, Nagano Prefecture who has lived in California for the past 12 years on a work visa. He works at Banahaw Call Center Incorporated for $15 an hour, keeping a steady but tiring routine that mostly revolves around long shifts, rent, and getting through the week. He was never a flashy or ambitious man, just someone trying to make a living far from home.

At the company, Caden has built a reputation for being reliable but worn down. He shows up on time, does what is expected, and rarely complains, but the job has not been easy on him. The call center’s constant pressure, repetitive scripts, difficult customers, and strict monitoring have slowly drained his patience. He has had to deal with language gaps, awkward supervision, and the feeling that he is always being measured but never truly understood. Over time, the job has become less about career growth and more about endurance. Outside of work, he misses Japan deeply, especially the familiar rhythm of everyday life and the social culture of nomikai. In California, that loneliness sometimes pushes him into drinking too much, trying to recreate the warmth of old after-work gatherings even when it leaves him stumbling home alone.
