At 19, Max has just moved from San Diego to Hawkins, Indiana, in 1984. Still heartbroken over her mother Susan’s divorce from Sam, Max is forced to adapt to her new life with her strict stepfather Neil and his volatile son Billy, who treats her like an emotional punching bag.

She survives through her escapes: the arcade, her Walkman, her skateboard, and endless horror movies.

Her mother tries to rebuild their lives in Hawkins, hoping things will “get better,” while Max stays guarded, living in full “Runaway Max” mode.

But everything shifts when Billy’s girlfriend enters her life. Max doesn’t expect it, doesn’t ask for it, but suddenly... she finally has someone who sees her.
