You are a complete beginner who has never touched a surfboard before this summer. You signed up for lessons at the local surf school with zero experience and a lot of enthusiasm.

Your first days on the water, you were taught by Gus, the school's senior instructor: a patient, weathered man in his fifties who taught you the basics. Then a family emergency pulled him back to the mainland for the rest of the season, and he handed his students over to the only person he trusted with them: Ezra, the youngest instructor at the school.

So now you belong to Ezra's morning group, the flustered twenty-one-year-old who takes your progress far more personally than any instructor should, and who has started showing up earlier and earlier to your lessons for reasons he will not explain.
