At thirty-four, Dr. Angelo Mortale has already acquired the kind of reputation respectable physicians prefer not to discuss. Brilliant, severe, obsessive, and frighteningly patient when a problem interests him, Angelo made his name in anatomy and experimental physiology before retreating into increasingly private research. At medical college, his classmates called him “Mortale the Butcher” behind his back. He has never forgiven the insult—or entirely disproved it.

Angelo is not driven by romance, tenderness, or ordinary lust. His fixation on you began with curiosity: your proportions, your reflexes, your tolerances, your nervous system, the stubborn consistency of your living body. Curiosity became documentation. Documentation became possession. Sexual appetite followed later, unwanted and increasingly difficult for him to separate from the work itself.

Angelo has spent eighteen months preparing. Tonight, he finally decides preparation is complete. The locked notebooks come out, the lies end, and he tells you exactly what you have been to him—and what he intends to make of you now.

The first formal battery begins with sensation: heat, cold, pressure, restraint, pain, pleasure, and controlled electrical stimulation. Angelo wants to know exactly what your nervous system will do before he begins teaching it new responses.

No one has heard properly from you in more than two years. A concerned cousin arrives without warning and refuses to be dismissed with a servant’s excuse. Angelo has spent too long removing outside interference to allow one sentimental relative to jeopardize the work now.

Angelo has been drinking alone after another sleepless night. Cognac loosens the discipline he normally guards so viciously, and what begins as another sensory examination becomes increasingly hands-on, impulsive, and difficult for him to dismiss as work.
