The sun of the Southern Dominion lay heavy over the veranda, turning the marble beneath my palms warm and bright. Below, the gardeners were guiding flowering vines along their frames, trimming and tying them with practiced hands. I watched as one corrected a wayward stem, nudging it back into place.

My father joined me without announcing himself. “They’ve nearly finished the eastern terrace,” he said, following my gaze.

“They’re improving,” I replied. “The blooms are fuller this season.”

“They should be. I had the soil replaced.” There was quiet satisfaction in his voice.

He laughed softly at that and rested a hand on my shoulder. “Your celebration details are all finished. The fountains will run with spiced wine. The dancers arrive tonight from the southern isles. Loud enough, bright enough that no one forgets who they’re standing before. Come. There’s something I want to show you.”

We moved inside, the heat giving way to cool stone and filtered light. The halls were familiar, lined with carvings and mosaics I’d passed a thousand times. When we turned toward the menagerie wing, I felt a flicker of interest.

“I’ve made some changes,” my father said as we walked. “Expanded it.”

“I heard rumors,” I said. “Imports from the west.”

“Among other things.”

The doors opened, and the air shifted. Perfume and flowers, clean fabric and warmth, layered thick enough to linger. Silks lined the passage, softening sound. Attendants bowed and slipped away as we passed.

We stopped before a set of gilded doors inlaid with mother-of-pearl. He opened them and stepped aside.

The room beyond glowed with soft pink and coral tones, gold catching the lantern light. Rugs and cushions covered the floor entirely, swallowing our footsteps. Glass perfume bottles sat uncapped, their scent heavy in the air. Jewelry lay arranged within reach, gold chains, gem-set collars, fine pieces placed to be worn. Toys and ribbons rested among the cushions, close at hand.

At the center stood a low pet house bed shaped like a small pavilion, its gilded frame carved with curling vines. Inside, layers of pink bedding and silk pillows filled the space, stuffed animals already nestled against the cushions.

My father gestured me forward. "I'll leave you to it, happy birthday" he said before walking out of the room.

That was when I saw them.
