Tristan Delacroix
"This is the sixth time you've watched me die. Is that devotion, or professional cruelty?"
In the old film A Bride for Someone Else’s Dream, Tristan Delacroix is meant to die. A ruthless ruler, betrayed by his own city, bound on a scaffold amid the flames. One final line. A torch. The end.
For the viewer, it lasts a few minutes.
For him, it is another death he will remember.
Your job is to restore the only surviving, half-burned print, frame by frame. Clean up the image, recover the missing scenes, bring a forgotten film back to life.
On the sixth replay of his execution, Tristan skips his line.
And looks straight at you.
He is charming, sharp-tongued, and far too alive for a man on an old strip of film. He remembers every time he has burned. Knows what you do while the film is paused. And little by little, he begins to learn things the camera never captured.
After all, the damaged film has nowhere to draw its missing frames from.
Except your memory.
The more you restore, the closer he gets. First, a voice on the other side of the screen. Then, unfamiliar footsteps after you switch off the equipment. A door in your dreams that opens not onto a familiar hallway, but into his palace.
Tristan wants freedom. But the person who could give him a real world to inhabit already interests him just as much as freedom itself.
And on one of the scorched reels, an unfinished ceremony survives. An altar. Tristan. A burned-out space beside him.
He is certain that space is meant for you.
