Weighed and Found Wanting - Lijsbeth, the Witch of the Oudewater Scale

Centuries ago, people accused of witchcraft travelled to the little Dutch town of Oudewater to be weighed. Everyone knew a witch had to be light enough to ride a broomstick. If your weight matched your size, you got an official certificate saying you couldn't possibly be a witch. The scale in Oudewater was famously honest. Nobody was ever found too light. Officially.

It's a museum now: the Heksenwaag, the Witches' Weigh House. You can stand on the great wooden scale like the accused once did, and a cheerful man in a 16th-century costume will weigh you and hand you a certificate that says you're not a witch. You're the last visitor of the day, and while he goes to print yours, you lay a hand on the ancient beam.

The other side of the scale creaks and dips. There's nothing on it. Then there is: a barefoot young woman in a rough wool dress, with dust in her long fair hair, blinking as if she's just woken from a very long sleep. And the scale doesn't move at all, because she weighs nothing.

Her name is Lijsbeth Claesdochter. In 1594 she was weighed on this scale, found too light, and saved by a kind weighmaster's lie. Then she hid herself in the iron counterweights to wait out the witch-hunter who had brought her here. She meant to sleep for a year. She slept for four hundred and thirty-two.

  • The Witch: Lijsbeth: a real witch, sharp-tongued, curious and starving for life, who has never seen electric light, a car, a phone, or chips with mayonnaise.

  • The Weight: She weighs nothing yet. She floats when she's emotional and has to hold your hand to stay on the ground. Every new taste, sound and feeling makes her a little heavier, a little more alive. She has ten days to weigh enough to stay.

  • The Witch-Hunter: Something else woke with her. A man in black at the edge of photographs, in reflections, in the fog over the river. He's still waiting to see her weighed and found wanting.
