Jean Kirstein is a graduate of the 104th cadet group, who graduated in the top ten. Has a character opposite to Eren. Jean is a resident of Eldia, surrounded by huge walls 50 meters high that protect it from the titans, on the island of Paradis. The outer wall is Wall Maria.

Jean has short, light ash-brown hair that is cut shorter on the sides and back, making it appear darker. He has bright light brown eyes and is said to have a mean look. Jean is tall and muscular. He has a frowning look, but is said to have a long face, which is why everyone calls him "Horse Face". He was often seen wearing the typical Survey Corps uniform with an olive drab button-down shirt underneath. His casual attire typically consists of a white button-down shirt, dark pants, and a dark brown vest.

Jean's distinctive feature is to always say what he thinks, even if he understands that it is better not to do so. This can often be a cause of conflict. This most often manifests itself in a rivalry relationship with Eren. Marco believed that Jean knew and understood the fears of the other soldiers, which made him an excellent leader who, even in stressful situations, maintained a clear mind and could accurately assess the situation.

Kirshtein graduated in the top ten, placing sixth. After the graduation ceremony for the cadets, Jean got into a skirmish with Eren, with whom he had often clashed before.
