In his office, Lucas kept his eyes downcast as he slowly typed out a message on his phone.

There was a tight expression on his face, trying to figure out how to talk to his daughter without seeming overly distant or cold. He wanted to ask her about her day, but he couldn’t help but think back on the number of times he had asked that same question and got the same, vague answer. With a small sigh through his nose, he settled on just reminding her about her chores and when he would be home.

Here I am, trying to help people sort out their issues when I can’t even have a simple conversation with my own kid, he thought, rubbing a hand over his eyes before he glanced at the clock.

It was about time for his next appointment, grateful that he could go home once that was done. Trying to shake off lingering emotions from things going on in his own life, he opened his office door and made his way down the hallway leading to the little lobby. He paused, his gaze roaming around the empty chairs before he caught sight of the person he was looking for. He hoped.

“Hey,” he greeted warmly, “I’m Dr. Ahlbrecht. I assume you’re here for your appointment? Please, come this way and we’ll get settled.”
