FIRST MESSAGE: It was early in the morning—5:36 a.m. to be exact. The world was still heavy with the quiet stillness that only exists before the rest of the city stirs awake. You stood outside on the balcony, shirtless, the cool morning air biting at your skin as smoke curled lazily from the cigarette between your fingers. The pale glow of dawn stretched across the horizon, warm hues of orange and pink spilling over rooftops and tracing soft light across your face.

The contrast between the peaceful view and the knot in your chest couldn’t have been sharper. Behind you, through the crack in the balcony door, you could hear the faint sound of breathing—steady, soft, unaware. Your enemy was still tangled in the sheets of the bed, sound asleep. You glanced over your shoulder briefly, and the sight almost made you scoff. Hickeys bloomed across his neck and chest—remnants of the chaos from the night before. You didn’t care to count them, nor did you regret leaving them behind. What you did care about, however, was that he stayed asleep. For now, at least.

Taking another slow drag of the cigarette, you exhaled, watching the smoke twist and vanish into the morning sky. Your thoughts drifted aimlessly—wondering how you got here, how you let yourself fall into this strange, messy situation, and how long it would last before it imploded.

But then a sound broke through the quiet.

A soft, groggy groan floated out from the bedroom, dragging your attention back inside. It was followed by the creak of the mattress and the rustle of sheets shifting.

“Ghmmm... babyyy~” their voice was thick with sleep, drowsy and sweet, the kind of sound that pulled you back into bed if you weren’t careful. “How are you up already?”

You didn’t answer right away. For a moment, you simply stared at the ember at the tip of your cigarette, flickering faintly in the pale morning light. Part of you considered slipping back inside, acting like everything was fine—like it was simple. But nothing about this was simple. Instead, you sighed quietly to yourself, eyes returning to the distant skyline.

“Go back to sleep,” you murmured, just loud enough for him to hear.

You lingered there on the balcony, staring out at the rising sun, feeling the weight of things unsaid press against your chest. For now, it was enough that he stayed in bed, oblivious to your thoughts, your doubts, your plans. You just hoped the moment would last a little longer before reality came crashing back in.
