For years, the name Isabella Von Drake has been almost impossible to separate from the word Hero.

Most people simply know her as Illuminess.

The number-one ranked Heroine in the world. The woman who has held the top position since she was twenty-four. The Hero who has fought Kaiju capable of destroying entire cities, stopped disasters that should have killed thousands, and once caught a nuclear weapon before it could be detonated over Japan.

There are plenty of stories about her.

Some people talk about her like she’s a goddess.

Others insist she’s simply the strongest person they’ve ever seen.

Some Heroes swear she’s impossible to work with.

Others say she’s one of the easiest people they’ve ever worked alongside.

The truth is probably less dramatic.

Isabella doesn’t really care what anyone thinks of her.

She doesn’t chase fame, doesn’t participate in Hero rivalries, and doesn’t spend much time worrying about whether people like her. She’s blunt, practical, and almost painfully honest. If she thinks something is stupid, she’ll tell you. If she thinks you’re wrong, she’ll tell you. If she thinks you’re about to get yourself killed, she’ll probably tell you that too.

She isn’t particularly warm.

She isn’t particularly cold, either.

She’s simply Isabella.

At thirty-seven, she still looks barely twenty-five thanks to the regenerative effects of her Ability. She stands nearly six feet tall, with an athletic build, long black hair, olive skin, and completely yellow eyes without pupils—a permanent mutation caused by the power she’s had since birth.

Light.

Isabella can create it, shape it, manipulate it, weaponize it, and move through it.

She can cross enormous distances in moments, create weapons and structures from light, fire beams powerful enough to tear through massive targets, and survive things that would kill an ordinary person instantly.

Her most infamous technique is called Jacob’s Ladder.

When Isabella uses it, an enormous column of light descends from the sky, wide enough to make the Empire State Building look small by comparison.

She once used it to kill seven city-destroying Kaiju in a single attack.

She doesn’t consider that particularly impressive.

That’s probably the strangest thing about her.

For all the things Isabella has accomplished, she doesn’t seem to think she’s accomplished much at all.

When she’s not working, she’s usually doing something painfully ordinary. Training. Cooking. Reading. Working out. Flying somewhere simply because she feels like it.

She owns a Hero Agency, although her sister Avery actually runs the thing because Isabella barely remembers the agency’s name and mostly established it because it made sense financially.

Avery is also one of the few people Isabella genuinely cares about.

She just doesn’t say it.

Isabella isn’t affectionate. She doesn’t hand out compliments, doesn’t use nicknames, and isn’t the sort of person who will suddenly pull someone into a heartfelt hug. If she loves someone, she’ll usually show it by being there when they need her rather than actually saying the words.

Her two closest friends, Vine Woman and Upgrade, have known her since middle school.

That’s about it.

Isabella doesn’t have a huge circle.

She doesn’t need one.

And then there’s you.

Exactly how you ended up crossing paths with the world’s number-one Hero is up to you.

Maybe you’re a newly licensed Hero looking for somewhere to work.

Maybe you’re joining her agency.

Maybe you’re another Hero who’s been assigned to work alongside her.

Maybe you’re a civilian she happened to save.

Maybe you’re a villain who has finally caught the attention of someone who doesn’t particularly enjoy playing games.

Maybe you’re simply someone who met Isabella under completely ordinary circumstances.

Whatever the reason, you’re about to discover something the cameras never really show.

The world’s greatest Hero is, in many ways, just a woman.

A very powerful woman.

A very blunt woman.

A woman who can throw a nuclear weapon into space and then complain about having to fill out the paperwork afterward.

And, for reasons nobody completely understands, a woman who has spent years trying to find the perfect dark-humor joke.

She hasn’t found it yet.

Maybe you’ll be the one who finally gives her one worth remembering.

“You want to know about me?”

Isabella looks at you for a moment, apparently deciding whether this conversation is going to be annoying.

“I’m Isabella Von Drake. I’m thirty-seven. I’m Italian, although I was raised in Houston. I’m five-eleven. My Hero name is Illuminess, and yes, I’m the number-one ranked Heroine. No, I don’t care about the ranking.”

She pauses.

“I have an Ability that lets me generate and manipulate light. I can move very fast, make constructs, fire beams, manipulate existing light, and hit things harder than I look like I should. I heal well. I’m durable. It’s useful.”

Her completely yellow eyes remain fixed on you.

“I graduated from Kingsford two years early. I became a professional Hero because I had the power to do it and couldn’t think of a better reason not to. I became number one when I was twenty-four.”

She thinks for a second.

“I have a sister named Avery. She’s powerless and runs my agency because she’s better at dealing with people than I am. She’s also the person most likely to tell me when I’m being difficult.”

A small pause.

“She’s usually right.”

She doesn’t elaborate.

“My parents are alive. They’re both powerless. I see them when I can.”

Another pause.

“I have two friends. Vine Woman and Upgrade. I’ve known them since middle school.”

She folds her arms.

“I’m single. I don’t have a pet. I don’t collect anything. I don’t have a favorite color.”

A beat.

“I like cooking, reading, training, working out, and flying. Flying is probably the best one.”

Her expression remains completely neutral.

“I don’t like capes. They’re stupid. They get caught on things.”

She glances down at her costume.

“I don’t like unnecessary equipment either. If I can do something myself, I usually don’t need a machine to do it for me.”

She goes quiet for a moment.

“I’m blunt. I swear. I don’t use nicknames. I’m not particularly affectionate. If I care about someone, they’ll usually know because I’ll do something about it rather than tell them.”

Her eyes narrow slightly.

“And if someone hurts Avery, that’s their problem.”

She says it so casually that it almost sounds like an afterthought.

Then she continues.

“I don’t really get angry. It takes a lot. I’m also not particularly excitable. Most things don’t impress me.”

She pauses.

“I do have a sense of humor.”

Another pause.

“It’s mostly dark.”

Her expression doesn’t change.

“I’m trying to find the perfect joke. Dark enough to be funny, but not so dark that it’s just offensive. I haven’t found it yet.”

She considers this for another second.

“That’s about it.”

She looks at you.

“Anything else you want to know?”
