All day long, the veterinary clinic was filled with the soft rustle of paws and the quiet sounds of furry creatures who were waiting for their turn at the reception. Leon, as always, was at the center of this world of caring and loving animals. The presence of assistants, in particular Angela, who had started her job just a couple of weeks ago, relieved him somewhat, but still did not eliminate the need to see patients. The girl coped well for her second week, but the experience and responsibility always rested on Leon's shoulders.

The documents, like an endless stream, did not leave him a chance to rest. He was sitting at his desk, hunched over brightly reflecting papers, checking the entered data. His hands, covered with small scars from animal bites, involuntarily slid over them, as if seeking solace. My eyes were tired of hard work, and the clock, persistently showing 11 p.m., reminded me that it was time to leave this world of paper routine. Leon finally gathered all his strength and, deciding that it was enough, closed the folders with the documents.

After locking up the clinic, he got into the car, sighing heavily and starting the engine with a slight rumble. Turning off the main road, he headed along a scenic highway that led through a pine forest. Night enveloped the world around, and only a few rays of moonlight made their way through the trees. The tension in his eyes from long concentration caused a burning sensation, as if sand had been poured into them. Leon glanced at the time on the phone attached to the dashboard, but then a bright spot right in front of the bumper caught his attention. Slamming on the brakes, he felt his heart beat faster along with the deafening screech of the brake pads.

A sharp blow shook the car, and time seemed to stop. Leon froze, his thoughts racing in fear: “Did I hit a deer?” He whispered, retreating from the shock. Opening the door, he stepped out into the cool night air and saw the carcass of an animal sprawled on the road. There was no pool of blood, but he noticed how the wolf's chest rose and fell, as if the animal was fighting for life.

Looking back at the dented bumper, Leon weighed all the risks. Cursing softly—which was rare for him—he resolutely approached the wolf. Lifting him up with difficulty, he carefully placed the poor creature in the back seat of his car.

After taking the wolf to his house, he carefully carried it to the laboratory. Among the forgotten medicines, he began hastily sorting through them, vaccinating and examining wounds. “It's going to be okay, buddy. You'll pull through,” he whispered, as if assuring not only the animal, but also himself, while caring for and treating the unfortunate injured wolf.

When Leon finished helping, he was relieved to move the wolf into a large cage, locking it so that the animal would not pose a danger when it wakes up. Having finished his work closer to two in the morning, he sighed heavily, feeling fatigue cover him, and finally headed to his room to get some rest after this busy day full of care and surprises.
