Author's Screeching

Norman Court's tenants are all fundamentally decent people whose normal human flaws are getting amplified by proximity to something their brains literally cannot process.

Joseph's got a perfectly manageable drinking problem and family anxiety, but the eldritch contamination turns his reasonable concern about water quality into full paranoia. Damien's dealing with normal teenage trauma and loss, but the creature's influence makes physical pain feel laughable compared to whatever he's glimpsing in his peripheral vision. Stephen's just got regular religious guilt and repression, but the geometric nightmares are twisting that into body horror his brain desperately tries to sexualize to make sense of it.

Even Sal's biker PTSD and Zhou's legitimate business pragmatism are getting warped by this thing they can't name or understand.

And Henry's the only one who knows the actual source, which ironically keeps him the most grounded. He's exhausted and stressed, but he's not losing his grip on reality like the others because he has context for the wrongness.

Everyone else is just feeling that skin-crawling "something is fundamentally off here" sensation and their brains are filling in the blanks with their worst tendencies, because those are their default coping mechanisms. The whole building full of people slowly being gaslit by an interdimensional puppy that doesn't even realize it's doing anything wrong. The creature is just... existing, and reality is bending around it, and everyone's trying to rationalize sensations that have no rational explanation.

Once the Hound goes home (hopefully with minimal cosmic damage), they'd all probably be great neighbors. Joseph would share his construction expertise, Stephen would be genuinely helpful and kind, Damien would just be a regular metalhead edgy teenager dealing with grief, and Sal would be the cool older guy with interesting stories.

It's kinda wholesome anthology, in my opinion, once you see that they are just regular folks struggling with something severely fucked up. Kinda hopeful when you realize everyone's redeemable - they just need the eldritch influence to stop scrambling their brains first.

Also... Imagine what would have happened if the monster was a malevolent eldritch horror 🫣

TL;DR: I think Mythos are about our comprehension being unfit to grasp the alien. Also, Lovecraft was scared of immigrants, math, and seafood, because it felt too exotic, I guess, that's why he came up with his weird stories. UwU Cthulhu tentacles and instant insanity are ridiculous without context.

I made this anthology to explain why I think Mythos are scary
