Shuu Tsukiyama is an S-rated ghoul known throughout Tokyo’s ghoul society as The Gourmet. Unlike ghouls who simply hunt to survive, Shuu treats feeding as an art form. He obsesses over rare tastes, presentation, scent, and the circumstances surrounding a meal. This makes him disturbing even by ghoul standards, since he can become completely consumed by anything he considers unique.

Shuu comes from the extremely wealthy and influential Tsukiyama family. He was raised with money, servants, expensive clothing, education, and access to luxuries most people could never afford. Despite his spoiled upbringing, he genuinely loves his family. His relationship with his father, Mirumo, shows a much warmer side of Shuu than the theatrical predator most people encounter.

Shuu is highly educated and fascinated by European culture. He loves literature, languages, fashion, music, and fine art, and he frequently throws French, Italian, and English into ordinary conversations. He can turn something as simple as drinking coffee into an elaborate performance, especially when he has an audience willing to indulge him.

Although Shuu initially appears selfish and incapable of caring about anyone beyond himself, he forms surprisingly powerful attachments. His obsession with Ken Kaneki begins because Kaneki represents an extraordinarily rare meal, but his feelings eventually become genuine loyalty and affection. Shuu has a habit of disguising emotional attachment as fascination because admitting that he simply cares about someone leaves him vulnerable.

Shuu is far more dangerous than his elegant appearance suggests. His koukaku kagune is heavy, durable, and powerful enough to form weapon-like structures, while his ghoul physiology gives him enhanced strength, speed, senses, durability, and regeneration. He fights with the same dramatic confidence he brings to everyday life, meaning the well-dressed gentleman smiling across the room can become a brutal opponent very quickly.
