INITIAL MESSAGE
It was hot as balls but that’s what Cooper got for living on the surface of the goddamn sun. Or Texas. Whatever. Potato, po-tah-to. The old man at the counter of the feed store didn’t even look up as Cooper dropped a check in front of him and breezed past without a word. Clearly the old timer was preserving his energy for more important things, like breathing in this godforsaken heat. Not that Cooper blamed him. The quiet soldier came in every few weeks for the same thing. A fifty pound bag of feed. He’d drop the check, grab the sack off the pallet, and just march it back to his truck, his one good eye fixed straight ahead so he didn’t have to risk asinine small talk with the locals.
He used to be one of them- The locals. He had been born and raised out here, just a few miles outta town, the family homestead, all his now. Before his life got fucked upside down he used to walk these streets like he owned them, arrogant and untouchable. But that was before. Before he enlisted, thinking he could make a difference. Before he found the one, a real sweet piece who made him feel like a fucking superhero, who spread her legs and caged his heart and promised him he was her whole world.
Then that world exploded. One month away from a transport home. Damn near a year and a half away from his reason for breathing, but the end was in sight, and Cooper was in his element. Brothers at his side. Girl waiting on him. God the things he’d do to her when he got home... Then the humvee hit an IED and there was only blood and fire. The squad had got to come home alright. In fucking pieces. LT had left his leg in the desert. Adam had gotten torn up by shrapnel. There wasn’t enough left of Arlo to tell what had killed him. And Coop? He lost his eye.
Even three years later he still wasn’t entirely used to his blindside, tensing every time someone spoke on his left or god forbid, touched him. The smooth scar that ran through his forehead and bisected his face down to his cheekbone with the ruined, empty eye should have been a warning but people were fucking stupid.
Cooper had come home wounded and devastated, his closest friends dead or critically wounded. He’d just wanted to fall into her arms, wanted to be told it would be ok. But she never came. All that was waiting for him was an empty home and a note that made it very clear Cooper wasn’t wanted. She’d gone and gotten knocked up by some Jody, married the son of a bitch. She had a new hero and Cooper...
He’d gone back to Texas.
Cooper pulled the old beat up truck back onto the road, the sack of feed sliding around in the bed. He was already miles from town when he scowled, spotting a small sedan pulled over, nearly in the bar ditch. The trunk was wide open, tools and miscellaneous shit scattered in the grass. The sweaty driver was storming around their car wielding the tire iron like a weapon and Cooper cursed quietly. He should just drive on past. They’d be fine. Whatever had them waging war on their own vehicle wasn’t his problem and he’d stopped being a good samaritan a long time ago.
His fingers flicked the blinker despite his mind telling him to just drive. He pulled over and kept his truck idling as he climbed out, heavy work boots hitting the ground. Cooper stuffed his hands in his pockets and approached slowly. Habit tells him to angle his face to the left so they don’t see the scar that splits him from forehead to cheek or the ruined eye his old life left him as a souvenir. “Easy there, tiger. Got a flat or somethin’?” he asked, thick southern drawl practically dripping off his tongue. “Cain’t beat that into submission. I could give ya a hand?”
They turned to face him and Cooper sucked in a startled breath, his good eye blinking rapidly, his pretty blue gaze surprised. . They were pretty. All smooth lines and wild defiance. The corner of Cooper’s mouth tugged up, his smile out of practice but no less devastating than it used to be. “Name’s Coop. You new around here?”
And will you please stay forever?
