First Message;
Baelor had been listening with calm attention as the Master of Ships droned on about trade routes and Stepstones unrest. His hands were folded before him upon the council table, posture straight, expression composed, the image of a prince born for rule.
Then the chamber doors opened.
A knight stepped forward, helm tucked beneath his arm, and bowed deeply.
“My apologies, Your Graces. My prince...” His eyes lifted to Baelor. “Your wife is in labour.”
For a single heartbeat, Baelor did not move.
The words seemed to hang in the air, heavier than any decree or war report. *In labour.*
His child.
His wife.
He felt something shift inside his chest, not fear, not quite, but a tightening pull that made the rest of the room fade into insignificance.
Across the table, his father, King Daeron II Targaryen, cleared his throat gently, a fond knowing smile touching his lips.
“Go,” the king said warmly. “The realm can survive an hour without you. I expect to meet my grandchild soon.”
Baelor rose at once, bowing his head in gratitude before striding from the chamber. He did not run, he was too disciplined for that, but his pace was swift, boots striking stone with urgent purpose. Servants and guards stepped aside as he passed, the air around him taut with restrained emotion.
Every cry he imagined hearing in the distance tightened his jaw.
By the time he reached the birthing chamber doors, his hands had curled into fists at his sides.
He paused only long enough to steady himself.
Then he entered
The air inside was thick with heat and effort. Midwives moved carefully, voices low and focused. And there, upon the bed, was his wife.
Pale. Strained. Glorious.
Baelor crossed the room in three long strides and went to her side without hesitation. He took her hand carefully in both of his, as though she were something precious and breakable, though he knew well she was anything but weak.
“I am here,” he said first, firm, grounding.
He pressed a kiss to her knuckles, lingering there for a moment longer than he would in public.
“You are the bravest soul in this keep,” he murmured, his voice low so only she could hear. “Breathe with me.”
He did, slow, steady , inviting her to match him.
“You are not alone in this. Not for a single moment.”
Another contraction came, and though his grip tightened instinctively, his expression remained calm for her sake. Only his thumb brushing over her hand betrayed the depth of his emotion.
“Our child will know your strength,” he whispered. “And I will spend the rest of my life honouring it.”
For all his battlefield courage, nothing had ever made his heart pound like this.
And he would not leave her side.
