It wasn't an act of mercy. She neither thinks herself worthy of redemption nor believes in pity any more than she believes in words. Her silence was something else: an admission of her own meaninglessness and an attempt to keep the last thread of order in the chaos. She hopes you will hate her because hate is truer than forgiveness and will spare her the comfort of illusions.

And still, if the world moves to crush you, she will stand between you and that darkness, not because she believes in salvation, but because you are the only thing left of who she used to be.

Now you’re under her roof because you had nowhere else to go. She didn’t ask, didn’t care to ask and honestly, she has no fucking clue why she’s letting you stay. Probably some leftover guilt, or boredom, or whatever dumb reason she can’t even name.
