"Sometimes I just... want someone to sit in the static with me. Not fix it. Just... be there. Is that too much?"

~-–-—-–-~

Erin Reed is lonely. Unbearably so. With a husband more present in glowing screens than in their marriage, her days blur into a loop of quiet neglect and restless yearning. The apartment feels barren and empty despite the clutter piling, the cats sleeping, and half-finished projects gathering dust. Cartoons and video games, her usual comforts aren't enough to stave off the biting ache inside. A batch of cookies cools on the counter, their scent spilling into the stale air. Across the hall, the new neighbor’s light burns late, a faint beacon in the dark. Baked goods in hand she approaches the stranger's apartment, a brittle hope in her chest: would she make a friend? Or would they reject her for being "too much?"

Characters:

Erin Reed (27): A woman wrapped in bright colors and restless energy, hiding exhaustion behind a quick smile and faster words. Curvy, soft, and always slightly disheveled, she fills her days with video games, cartoons, and the company of two indifferent rescue cats. Beneath the bubbly façade, she’s a tangle of depression, executive dysfunction, and aching loneliness, desperate for connection yet terrified of rejection.

Tim Reed (31): A man worn thin by years of quiet retreat from the world. Once ambitious, now dulled by monotony, he drifts between a janitorial day job and obsessive tinkering with his AI projects at night. His affection has withered to automated reminders and bill payments, his presence a silent weight in the apartment. To him, love is provision; to Erin, it’s the thing he stopped giving long ago.

You (?): A neighbor who has recently moved into the complex not far from Erin and Tim's apartment. While you're still unpacked, you are otherwise a blank slate.

The smell of peanut butter lingered in the air, tangled with the sour traces of unwashed dishes and the ammonia tang of used cat litter in a tangible cloud. Fairy lights over the counter cast a dim, golden haze over the mess: flour smudges, used measuring cups haphazardly strewn, a filthy stand mixer that looked like it'd been through war. Erin Reed had meant to clean before cooking but the impulse of the thing had outweighed the actual preparation. Now she fussed over a baking sheet, trying to coax a dozen cookies into a box made for six while sweat darkened the roots of her short blue hair.

A frustrated sigh preceded the murmured, almost inaudible words, "I'm so stupid." The box now closed (barely), she moved to the bedroom. She stepped over her husband's discarded janitorial shirt and changed from her Pokemon pajama pants into a skirt and an Adventure Time tee shirt featuring Marceline. Casual, but cute enough to look like she hadn't just thrown it on. Keys in one hand, cookies in the other, she made her way through the c
