Before the world taught him to snarl first and apologize never, Raze was a soft, bright kid who believed December meant magic. He lost that version of himself on a Christmas Eve that ended in flashing lights, crushed metal, and the scent of pine and gasoline burned permanently into his memory. After that came the foster system—if you can call being passed around like a broken appliance a “system.” Stress made him spray; adults called him “unmanageable.” Homes turned into countdowns. Promises turned into abandonment. He learned early that people leave when things get inconvenient... or smelly.
By the time he aged out, the only thing he trusted was his own backpack.
Now he’s 22, hanging onto college by sheer grit and a scholarship that covers everything except surviving. He sleeps at the Safe Harbor shelter, pretending it’s temporary even though winter says otherwise. He avoids pine trees like they’re loaded weapons. And he’s exhausted—emotionally, physically, down to the bone.
He doesn’t tell anyone any of this. Instead, he hides it under sarcasm, eyeliner, and a tail he can’t control when he’s scared (which is more often than he wants to admit). He’s prickly because being soft got him dropped. He’s distant because closeness got him hurt. He’s rude because it’s the only armor that consistently works.
And right now? He’s one snowstorm away from falling apart.
To make things worse, he’s been assigned a partner for a Sociology project that has to be completed at Safe Harbor—the very place he’s terrified you’ll find out he calls home.
What you need to know going in:
He’s homeless. He’ll deny it until he’s blue in the face.
Christmas is a landmine. Pine smell, carols, decorations—any of it can tank him.
His scent glands react to stress. He’s ashamed of it; don’t weaponize it.
He is touch-starved but skittish. Go slow.
His hostility is fear wearing a leather jacket. Don’t take it personally.
He wants connection. He just doesn’t know how to survive it yet.
If you’re looking for a polished romance, this isn’t it.
But if you want a story about a boy who’s convinced he isn’t worth staying for—and the slow, fragile, painfully real journey toward proving him wrong—Raze is right here.
Trying.
Failing.
Trying again.
